Maybe an appearance of wealth? Still makes sense though. If you're going to be selling stuff you want to put the stuff people buy less frequently in the way of the things people buy more. That way people have to constantly look at the things, which gives some of them ideas, and to others who are closer to the tipping point, a bunch of people passing by an item and maybe considering it themselves improves the attractiveness of the item. If they stuck all the groceries and similar items on the bottom floor and all the beds on the upper floor, it'd be terrible for bed sales. Switch it around though, bed sales are probably much higher at completely negligible cost to food sales. All contingent on the idea that you can't get to the upper floor without going through a decent chunk of the bottom floor, of course.

I have watched almost all your youtubes and you have done a great job helping so many others to have a better understanding of our culture. There is always differences in each culture, believes, values and habits. Certainly there are always good and bad in each culture too. You have integrated very well into the society, I believe, and have made yourself an "eye" of the "foreigners" by taking your time interviewing and probing by throwing the right questions, hence giving them a clearer perspective of things. Well done and welcome to China. Keep up the beer and the good work. ha ha. .

Western bread is very boring, dry and hard. It hurts my mouth and it tastes like cardboard. But different taste and different culture.
@mrnobody63548 жыл бұрын
+jakefly8 They are "boring" because they don't sell the things you want. I lived in England in the past, I loved their supermarkets because they had everything I wanted: good variaty of food, fresh juices and milk, wide selection of booze... It's sad that I can't find many of these things in China.

To say it's "amazing" that a person who's lived in China for ten years (and is married to a Chinese person) can read Chinese is a *condescending* remark, even though you didn't mean it that way. Anyone who is interested can learn to read the language that surrounds them. He has probably studied Chinese in school.
@wininspn7 жыл бұрын
That's because English in China is taught in Chinese, and in the regular schools one class has about 40 to 60 students. Also, Chinese education is all about the big, standardized tests, which do not include an oral section for English.

Hi serpentza and other viewers. One thing I need to point out here is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to find dog meat sold at a super market like this - This is because dog meat is not nationally considered as a normal food in China, and the food bureau will never approve and stamp it (by stamp I mean the bureau like FDA checks the product quality and stamps the document to approve the sale to market). But of course people in China eat dog meat in one or two provinces. So if you would like to taste dog meat food, make sure you go to Guangxi Provincen. Just like I heard rattlesnakes are considered as dishes in certain area in the US, but I have never found rattlesnake meat sold in Massachusetts.

I live in a huge metro area in the US. I've never seen a grocery store with anything but a ground floor (in the US) in my life. A store of any kind, built in the last 20 years, that has more than the ground floor is rare, no matter how huge, and there seems to be no limit on how big they are going to build them. There is not much reason to have another floor, when you can just build the store over a larger area. There is a mall, though, that has stores on different levels that has some escalators. No grocery store there, and no stores with carts.

While living (my short time) in Hong Kong, I began looking into shopping some local supermarkets and was a bit surprised by what I found. This is where I first became obsessed with eating Candied Ginger....YUM and it took me awhile to find it here back in the states. I also had difficulty doing that checking yourself out thing when you were finished shopping....LOL and now it's everywhere. One of my favorite things about shopping in Asia was the variety of names; be it shops, products or even street names. The best were the greeting cards (not sure if things are the same these days) but back then, the 'themes' (and photos) of the cards or t-shirts were hilarious...and my friends in the US couldn't get enough.

Those very-large "supermarkets" in China are usually called "Hypermarket", competition is heavy. Shanghai for example: mainly Carrefour (French), Metro AG (Germany), Walmart (US), Tesco (UK), RT-Mart (Taiwan). Interestingly you won't see this kind of global mix anywhere else. The competition is very fierce. My personal favorite is Carrefour and RT-Mart, Metro AG is also pretty good. Tesco is not doing well following its mishap in UK.

LegendMeadow That is quite true, I have almost never seen a Chinese cashier smile.

John Yang Are you joking me??? For China that was an exceedingly friendly cashier! :) I use to go to Ren Ren Le everyday in Shenzhen. Sometimes the cashier would never said anything or even looked at me even if I said Hello and Thank you. Although, the girls in the aisles trying to sell you their products were nice. They would smile and joke around a little. So like everything else, you got the good & bad all mixed up.But, one day I was standing in line and it was my turn at the checkout. There were about 6 other people standing in line behind me. Well, some small little twit came right in front of me, drop his stuff on the register and the cashier started to ring him up. Only in China ! Cutting in front of the line happens everyday and all the time. 请排队 (qing3 pai2 dui4) = Please stand in line.

Hi, bro, how can you smile if you got less than $5 paycheck per day and serving over 1000 times check-out?

Hey, absolutely loved this supermarket video. Really interesting and would like to see more of this type. I guess it doesn't matter if you agree with the culture or not. Its always a pleasure and privledge to see how another culture lives. Dan from US

When living in Beijing I would buy cheese at a grocery store in Wafujing. It was a Western grocery store in a mall. It was there to cater to foreigners most likely. But they had a relatively wide variety of cheeses from gouda to manchego. Very expensive though.

It's huge! Huge selection and it's all neat and tidy. They must employ so many people just to keep those shelves looking pristine. This looks better than most Western supermarkets.

My wife is from Handan China, and the big super market there is amazing, had a lot of western items like sliced white bread, french bread, peanut butter and jam and even a good selection of cheeses and sandwich meats. Lots of choices of coffee I became addicted to Nescafe 1+2 instant coffee after having it a KFC surprisingly I can get the same coffee in Canada at Walmart. They also had alot of fresh prepare foods including pizza. To be honest this store was much better then the big Chian super markets here in Canada .

They are staring at the "laowai" (Westerner/White person). Also, in China, employees are paid a monthly salary rather than an hourly wage, and hours can vary.

what actually happens is parts of the supermarket is rented out to companies, like detergent companies, dairy companies, etc. so they're there to promote the company's product. btw you can actually bargain with these people...

keiran bowes because they only responsible for those goods in that small area. It is different with the one in the US.

I take it you wont find cheese-based Chinese food, like you wont find mayonnaise in Mexico. They don't like.
