I drive tanker trucks up into Canada sometimes. When you are coming back into America and get to the window they ask if you have anything to declare. They may ask to see my Bill of lading but always ask to see my passport. You never know if you are going to be chosen to go through the x ray machine until you are speaking to the agent. If chosen he hands you a piece of paper and you are told to pull forward and another agent will meet you at the entrance. He will speak to you then go to the controls of the x ray machine and have you pull forward slowly. I'm a veteran and the x ray equipment is the same stuff we used in Iraq and Afghanistan to x ray containers and equipment coming onto our bases. Once you are cleared you go to the next station and you are on your way into America. Going into Canada they always ask me if I have any firearms or knifes or mace. Also how much cash I have on me. I have only crossed into Mexico in El Paso and you can just walk across the bridge and shop then return. After 9-11 we were forbidden from crossing into Mexico unless you had written permission and that was never going to happen. Many soldiers got into trouble in Juarez and got arrested for fighting and drunken behavior. Some sat in Mexican jail for weeks... Hope this helps.

@ Anytime sir. Also people must remember when they make purchases at the duty free shop the customs officer can see your receipt when you pull up to his booth... Some knuckleheads lie about what they purchased and get caught up. Liquor and cigarettes get them caught up.
