I believe the alternate break was introduced to compensate for the races getting shorter, because winner breaks sucks in short races. From that perspective, it's really 9-ball matches getting shorter that sucks, and the main reason is that luck plays such a big role in 9-ball; you need long races so that the luck evens out and the better player emerges.

Alternate break is fair as the break is so important, however, the 3 point rule needs to go

Alternate break is fair. If winner breaks, you can lose without even playing a single shot. How silly.
