I enjoy these videos so much. Like this one, how a film shot in the 1930's is made to look like it was just filmed in the last 5 years on a high resolution camera. The people that do this transformation are very special people. Thanks for your hard work and fantastic creativity! Keep them coming!!!

I would say this is HongKong and not Beijing because: U can see sea at min,0:59, there is no sea in Beijing, but there is sea in Hong Kong. (2) Too many store signs written in English, and also a tram, so probably HongKong, not Beijing. (3) min.1:46, a sign has written "Carne de Vaca", this is Portuguese for "beef". Macau is next to HongKong, so it is possible someone deciced to have a sign in Portuguese. (4) Gambling houses signs written in English, again, more probable in HongKong than Beijing.

I think this video has more than just Beijing in it. 0:07, I can't think of any street with that kind of slope in Beijing. Beijing is flat, and those narrow streets are usually hutongs, nothing like this one. I agree with you 0:59 is definitely not Beijing, not sure if it is Hong Kong though. 1:05 looks like the ZhengYang Gate of Beijing. And such a big gate is unlikely anywhere else except Beijing. My guess is there are at least two cities in the video.

1:11 I can hear my hometown Hoishan (Taishan of Guangdong Province) ‘s dialect. “Ai Feng Ai Sui 大風大水” means heavy wind and rain in Hoishanese. I wonder where the original audio was taken, there were many Cantonese sounds on it (Definitely not in Beijing where there’s a Mandarin speaking area).

Correct me of I’m wrong please. Minute 0:58, if you check the background it seems to appear a three chimneys ship, which it could also be a factory but looks like a ship to me. So if is a ship is not Beijing. I also saw a panel at the end of the video were you can read: "Carne de vaca” in Spanish. It seems to me to be some other place in china with a higher commercial movement than Beijing in 1930s

Nice job for restoring and coloring the original footage. However, the streets and the scenes were not those of Beijing, China (Peking as it's called in 1930s). Those were mostly the scenes of the cities in the southern China from people's outfits, the ways of living, as well as the architectures.

@@carbonsnail014 China was never colonized by the Europeans back then. This fiction was used by the Communists to scapegoat others and claim credit to themselves. The largest ever European colony was on Hong Kong Island with most of its land on Kowloon Peninsula leased for 99 years which expired in 1996. Shanghai had foreign concessions where foreigners were subject to laws of their own countries rather than Chinese laws, but Shanghai remained sovereign Chinese territory otherwise instead of a colony. An example of an Asian country colonized by Europeans was India, which gained independence under Gandhi. China always had its own government under either the Qing Dynasty or under the Chiang Kai-Shek.

To me, some part of the footage with those Hong Kong style narrow (not just narrow but Hong Kong style)street , some people looks like southern Chinese inside of northern Chinese and in a moment there's bay and ships in there(Beijing is not a city by the sea), those make me think of Hong Kong but as other people point out it could be Macau or both. In other part of footage, there is a old city gate and broad street looks like shot in Beijing but it could be other cities in China(but not in Hong Kong and Macau, I don't think there is any old Chinese city gate in these two city). Quite peaceful for a country engulfed in civil war at the time

While there was a civil war at the time, most of the conflict was concentrated mostly on encirclement campaign in the rural areas, sparing most of the urban areas from the conflict. That and the fact that China back then was experiencing the Nanjing Decade under the Kuomintang where the country became more stable than the pre and post Nanjing Decade. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanjing_decade en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encirclement_campaigns

Most of the footage, from the sound to the landscape/ cityscape, shop fronts etc., look more like Hong Kong rather than Beijing in the 1930s. @0:07 you can faintly see the Victoria Harbour in the background

Cuz it's the true republic of China, before the communist calamity took over the country. We called it the West Taiwan 🤭

(4) Gambling houses signs written in English, again, more probable in HongKong than Beijing.

drastic change from video shot in 1920. people dressed in t-shirt and lot of western culture compared to 1920 video where people still dressed in ancient chinese clothes. unless this video was shot during summer and the other one was shot during winter then it makes sense.

It didn’t say exactly which year it was taken, but in 1931, Japan invaded China, China was dragged into 8 years of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

Did Beijing really use left-hand traffic in the 1930s? Some parts of China, like the International Concession in Shanghai and Japanese-occupied Manchukuo (and perhaps even Guangdong and Yunnan), used left-hand traffic at that time, before 1946 when Jiang Jieshi (a.k.a. "Chiang Kai-shek") ruled that all vehicles in China must be driven on the right-hand side.

both my parents lived in this beautiful city at then, but left in 1937 because of the war with Japan, and they never went back. I really wish they could watch this film, but they passed away many years ago.
