CHINA: PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT ESTRADA VISIT

Philippine President Joseph Estrada arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a state visit which will focus on security issues in the Pacific and bilateral trade.
The five-day visit will include meetings with President Jiang Zemin, Premier Zhu Rongji, and Vice President Hu Jintao - seen by some observers as Jiang's likely successor as general secretary of China's ruling Communist Party.
Following a welcoming ceremony and review of China's honor guard on Tiananmen Square on Tuesday, Estrada entered the Great Hall of the People to meet one-on-one with President Jiang Zemin.
Estrada is expected to bring up the dispute over the Spratlys, a chain of islands, atolls and reefs in the South China Sea that are claimed by the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.
However, his official agenda includes discussions on trade and cooperation.
But another pressing issue has dogged Estrada both in the Philippines and from the international community.
Before departing Manila, Estrada assured Filipinos a hostage crisis and guerrilla fighting in the southern Philippines would stay under control during his five-day absence.
Political foes at home have expressed concerns that Estrada has not demonstrated much hands-on leadership at a time when a small band of Muslim extremists in the south is holding 21 hostages, including 10 foreign tourists.
Meanwhile government troops are fighting with a larger Muslim group that wants independence.
The Abu Sayyaf guerrillas holding the hostages have indicated that they are willing to focus first on freedom for an ill German woman when they meet next with government negotiators.
But any freedom for Renate Wallert, 57, will depend on the government agreeing to certain conditions, a rebel leader said.
