I think it would be constructive to think about things a bit more systemically. If you are outside of the US, and you look at US actions as objectively as possible, you would come to the conclusion that the US is a rogue state. What does a rogue nuclear state want? How would they most likely achieve these goals? How to defeat that kind of system? Russia and China currently have conventional deterrence capabilities.
