China's INCREDIBLE Weifang Kite Festival (Team UK No Shows, I STEP UP) 潍坊风筝battle英国队没来，我临时替补上阵！

The 19th World Kite Championships took place during the 40th Weifang International Kite Festival, in Shandong Province, China, and I was there to speak to some of the international competitors who had flown in especially to attend.
I also discovered that Team UK hadn't turned up, which meant I had to do the only thing that I could. Step up and represent my country!

Their reaction when they realized you spoke Chinese at 2:15 is so wholesome. This is exactly why more people should be learning other languages. When someone sees that you've taken the time and effort to learn their language, even if it's a simple sentence, it makes their day. Because when you learn another language, you're also opening a door to their culture, and thus entering a whole new world and a new perspective. A surprise to no one, the Swede did a Viking longship for their country 😂Love it! I don't blame him for being proud of their menacing and epic history! And it's no lie about Gujarat! It takes place every year on January 14, and they begin to manufacture kites for the festival months beforehand! It's specifically on January 14 for the festival of Uttarayan when winter begins to turn into summer according to the Hindu calendar. It is also known as Makar Sankranti as it marks the advent of harvesting season for the farmers (though in nine thousand years, Makar Sakranti would be in June). The joy of harvesting is celebrated with flying kites. Up to ten million people participate!

Real shame you didn't talk to our team there. I assure you, we don't bite! I think it says a lot when a war-torn countries like Ukraine, Central African Republic, and Yemen have teams there...but not the UK. But hey, you gave it a try and that's what counts! Also, I see a Macanese flag in the background at 2:01 so it's nice that even the SARs are participating! Love that Macanese flag not just because it looks nice with the lotus, but its symbolism is great too! The lotus flower in full bloom represents the everlasting prosperity of Macau (which they're certainly not wrong about that; gambling being banned in Mainland China definitely helps). Below the lotus is the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge that links Macau Peninsula with Taipa. The bridge and lines of water represent Macau's position as a port and its important role. And the stars represent the PRC and Macau's relation with it. And what brings it all together is the nice shade of green in the background.

Everyone seems so friendly and happy to talk to strangers. I love seeing international unity, especially with the Indian and Pakistani tent. I loved the Shaun the Sheep kite and the rainbow one that the handlers made go into a circle. Now, I want to know how cool the Gujarati kite festival is!
