With extraordinary access to devastated parents desperately searching for their stolen son; a man who brokers the deals and has sold his own offspring; and prospective parents grappling with giving up their soon-to-be-born daughter through lack of options, we are brought face to face with the crisis that such a stringent government policy has created among China's poorest people.

How is it that kids are getting stolen but the abandoned and abused babies in the orphanages are left to rot? Something is terribly wrong with this government. May God of heaven step in and deal justice to this wicked government!

the children in orphanages are either disabled, girls or children of people who are serving prison time or are on death row and poverty. In Chinese culture shame is a big thing. When people fail, they not only lose their own face, but they shame all those around them.

Ikr? I guess it’s true what they say about committing crimes and having a seared conscience. The really heartbreaking part was about the young girls. I think if I had a daughter she would be handcuffed to me. The problem is that I understand they will even kidnap women who are already married and pregnant. They don’t care. I watched one video and this man went to some other country. I forget where. He talked himself up like he was a wealthy -movie producer or model ing agent. He told her he could get her work. He took her to his home which was little more than a shack. And since she couldn’t speak the language they would talk about her, his mother treated her like an indentured servant. The neighbors all watched her so she couldn’t escape, she was left with no money, no escape route, nothing. I don’t think I could stand myself.

@@siriusrainbow You see it is the cycle of tragedy... These countries are so poor that they cannot afford all of their kids, then sell them; The government saw these problems and write a one-child policy to forbid them selling their kids and put their limited resource on one child; Then they still create multiple babies and sell them... for making a living...; For the beginning of this policy, they abandon the female babies because the discrimination of women... then the female number in the all counties decreased... Finally, they found out that their son need a wife... so they found the kidnapper to do the kidnapping for them in other area. Specifically target for teenager girls...The wrong things is not done by the government, it just because none of these people has conscience... What happen even if the policy have not exist? It's really the most disgusting thing about China and needs to be talked about everywhere. Nothing could be worse than having your child stolen, and sometimes right out of your arms while they tear them away and jump in a car and speed away, but the worst is that other Chinese people in public places do NOTHING to help. The police treat it with not much caring. It's considered less important crime than a robbery of a store. To them children are expendable. They need to wake up and pay attention to the problem as the rest of the world shames them and they get serious on stopping it.

In rural areas people are so close to each other. I live in the city, but when I was young, and my parents have to over-work, they'd pay old neighbors to take care of me -_-. And in a small town where my grandparents live, people just walk into other people's courtyard without notification. That's how familiar people are with each other, and that creates a kind of "trust", that makes crime easier :/

At first, my heart was breaking for the kidnapped children and their families, but I completely lost faith in humanity when multiple families wanted to sell their children. I can't imagine the circumstances these people are in, but are you kidding me? Talking about selling your newborn daughter, your one-year-old son, your six-year-old? I literally cannot imagine how damaged these children must be and I think it's safe to assume that the people who are buying them are going to be mistreating them to say the least. This is one of the most atrocious human rights violations I've heard of in a long time. In the years since this documentary was made, have there been any changes?
@jadewang7287
@jadewang7287 6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they're not going to mistress them. Some families buy boy just because they want a son. They're going to treat them like their own. However, the biological parents were left heartbroken. In some cases, the kids were fond decades after abduction, but after getting reunited with their biological parents, they expressed the wish that they'd rather be with their "adoptive parents", for the bond built during all those years. There's a movie called 亲爱的(Dearest) talking about this issue. The situation is getting better than the time this documentary was filmed. But this phenomenon still exist.

These people straight up tell these women that they will sell the children either for organ harvesting or to a brothel where they will be drugged and raped until they are either taken away for organ harvesting or until they are deemed “ too old and used up because they have been drugged their entire lives, and then are put in snuff films and killed. I an heartsick watching this doc.I had no real clue what the one child law would do to China. I was born in 1960. I was made aware of it in school in Australia. I knew it would skew the population, I knew that females could never be heads of their own households. Selling and buying children so that your family can live? Forced abortions in the last trimester? What kind of economic growth is worth this price? Bride Auctions? The preference for only sons made daughters the rarest of commodities; a bride for that son. Yet the trafficker told the family that girls were worth less than boys now that is skewed. If your shopping just walk up to the window and pick one out. Human beings being sold like fish and chips. I feel sick.The only thing that gives me any comfort is that there are that there are rescuers. The precious few that for whom a human life male or female must not be a commodity. The agent who "takes a small commission for his expenses and raising his son" I have no words! For the parents who are selling their baby because they don't have permits, The parents who supply the children selling 2 or 3, children who are being bought to keep and care for the new parents in their old age. The only way to get any child back is to do the police's job for them and present them with the perpetrators. I am, I have no words. To have to hang your hopes for being reunited with your child on a pack of playing cards with the other missing children feels cruel to me. This one child policy has devastated the culturally accepted filial responsibility methodology. I feel heartsick!

1 child policy was being phased out anyway and it was finally repealed altogether in 2014. There were many exceptions, as I understand, especially for rural families and families lacking relatives through death/whatever, divorces/ separations, or where there was a disability/ illness in family, or first child died/ disabled and such.--meaning many mothers allowed to bear more than one child for a long time prior to the repeal of this law. still, the policy has a profound effect, no doubt--nation of so many only kids the sole focus of parents and elders, and without siblings.

Honestly I think the old lady has something to do with it, the story is Grandma was inside while the little boy played out in the vegetable patch, along came a neighbor who lured him with candy and took him home supposedly, grandma comes out and he's gone, she's has no idea where he went.. how does she know what he was lured with? Or who it was? She saw nothing? Normally kidnappings happen by a family member, maybe she thought her daughter cant offer him a good life, she definitely has something to do with it, she probably made some money too.

I don't understand. If that neighbour was the last person being with the child, he is the one responsible. He could be held on a lesser charge, like abandonment of a minor at least a felony (he says he left him on his own on the street), if kidnapping cannot be proven. If jailed, he would start to sing. Having said that, since it is an organised crime, the police are in it up to their necks as well, they know exactly what happened but will not hold the guy responsible. Those people have pockets instead of hearts.
@blondecat666

***** Legally yes, but the police could have threatened him with jail (they usually not very hesitant to lie when they want to solve a crime - here they were just corrupt), so he would tell them what he knew.

Hopefully the police or the private investigator can find their children soon. I wish them luck and I will keep them in my prayers. God bless these poor people. I feel so bad for Chen Jie's parents. How awful they have to feel guilty about letting their families down while dealing with the loss of their little boy! :( China's one child policy is horrible. Of course the population should be reduced but combining that with their Confucian ethics it's obvious they will end up with surplus boys. They need a more holistic approach less punitive, which rewards childless couples and 1 child families instead of punishing larger families.

Amazing how different societies can coexist and be centuries apart in thinking.Traditional way of thinking---family members represent monetary value and status for family: laborers for farm or workers for family business, dowry and potential to enrich family through marriage, or sons who build career/business---all property, assets. Well, I guess that's how some entrepreneurial types think in the West, too.

The numbers of children abandoned or left behind with elders or on their own in the country with grandparents is a national shame and even if the government has ignored the problem, the parents and children are aware that moving into the cities for high paying jobs has taken a great toll on the family units.
