Its important to remember that China functions much differently then other countries past or present. They are able to exert influence not through guns and bombs, but through favorable access to their massive manufacturing base and ownership of formerly state-owned assets of forign nations such as shipping ports in Israel. In a way, the Neo-Liberal economic policies implemented in the Western World proved that capitalism and imperialism may be the quickest way to enrich the Eleits, but will deteriorate every other aspect of the public sector through privatization. This includes national security and Israel is finding out this reality at the worst possible moment for it.

It is sensible not to send merchant ships into dangerous war torn areas of the globe. So their decision is not a sanction but just common sense. China has a policy of trying to be friendly with all countries and not interfering with their internal affairs but they also are committed to peace and act accordingly in the United Nations. Unlike the USA they do not seek to become friends via military alliances. They seek to be friends via free trade with others.
