Wet markets are all over Asia. What’s important is to sell only farmed animals where the living conditions are regulated and the source can be tracked.

you should probably make the distinction between wet markets and wild animal vendors, which are outlawed now. It seems like western media can't or don't want to make that distinction. Also, Xianggua tastes like a cross between a cantaloupe and a cucumber, I've always thought.

CWW yes right, it’s a farmers market. It’s not the same market as in Wuhan where they also sell all kinds of exotic animals. I am 16 years living in Weihai but I have never seen the exotic animal markets here. In the supermarkets they sell the same product as on the wet markets. Meat I buy in the supermarket, fruit and vegetables at the wet market.

In fact, new regulations already restrict the animals which are allowed to but/sell/eat in market. So wild animal is not allowed. Wet market is not wild market. Most of Chinese do not eat bat (it is illegal).

It has been nice to leave our complex this week. People park was empty and we saw maybe a couple hundred people. Walmart was busy and we restocked our kitchen. Walking the streets with few people, the sidewalks are very clean, to avoid/ everyone has mask. Everyone minding their own business, while very few surprised to see me still around. Hi Kirk, thanks for the video. I noticed these days there are so many properganda articles and misinformed news to critise and suggest to ban wet market. In my view, some of the westerners has misunderstand the definition of wet market in some aspects. The market you went to is a typical chinese market, people sell vegi, dry goods, pickling vegi, deli food, seafood and meat. So basically it is a supermarket which is not own by big franchise or tycoon. I do think we should tighten the regulation to ban people who sell those wild animals, but wet market is totally fine. The wet market which you went to is the kind of the market I went with my mum when I was a kid, good memories.

Many "wet markets" exist all over Asia. They are lively and bustling places who support the small local stallholder and businesses! Sometimes they give more value for money than chain supermarkets. In Singapore, supermarket oligopolies exists. They cost more than wet markets. I agree that meat should be slaughtered at authorised regulated abattoirs and not keep live animals ( domestic or not) at the market. Implement off-market days to deep clean these places regularly.

The so-called wild animals are actually mostly artificial breeding. The omission in the translation of the text, cause the international community to believe that all Wet Markets in China are selling wild animals 。

Vincent Kiu i realise that but it doesn’t matter whether the animals are farmed or wild. It’s the unhygienic conditions in which these markets operate which makes them dangerous. The horrible conditions in which the animals are being kept, large numbers of them crammed into small cages and in close proximity to people.

Wet markets are part of life in most parts of Asia particularly smaller towns. I love wet markets. The govt just have to ensure the people keep the area clean. Vegetables and fruits prices have gone up in Australia. How did China manage to keep their food still relatively cheap?

many thanks for the great video. As a Chinese live in South Korea, I really appreciate the Korea traditional fresh market. all fresh meat sold there must be in the cold-chain. that the key to control the food hazard. and the price is better than that in supermarkets.

The reason they sell live animals is because they're obsessed with freshness. It's hard to tell whether prepared meat has been artificially preserved with harmful chemicals like formaldehyde by dishonest vendors, and also I guess it would cost a lot more to have refrigeration en masse.

Not sure why he's saying it'll never change and should never change. There are already movements to improve sanitation standards, bring markets indoors, upgrade facilities, keep livestock separate, keep slaughter in its own connected or neighboring facility, further crack down on the wildlife trade which was already in the minority at wet markets, reduce animal cruelty, etc. Of course these things should change. It's just very hard and will take time.

@Shimmy Shai Thank you for the sincere informative reply. I agree. From what I understand, people still overwhelmingly go to wet markets rather than supermarkets for fresh produce and meat, but supermarkets beat them in everything else.
