Long dominated by the United States, the Asia-Pacific region is grappling with an increasingly assertive China. Tensions are mounting around Taiwan and in the South China Sea, both in the air and on the water, with numerous incidents of late involving Chinese fighter planes, collisions between ships and reefs being turned into military outposts. Filmed in Japan, China, Taiwan and the Philippines, our documentary explores a new "cold war" pitting President Xi Jinping's authoritarian China against the US and its democratic allies in the region. This high-stakes conflict encompasses territorial, political, economic and ideological dimensions, as the threat of a third world war looms on the horizon.

Watching this documentary hits close to home. As a Filipino, the tensions in the South China Sea concern us deeply. It's unsettling to witness the complexities of this 'cold war' unfolding in our region. Hoping for diplomatic solutions and unity among democratic allies to navigate through these challenging times.

Offering a correct perspective and conducting an accurate assessment of the situation is important. It's crucial to realize that no single country or nation possesses exclusive ownership of an entire sea or ocean, except within the boundaries of their jurisdictional nautical distances from the coastline and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) as outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It's worth noting that China voluntarily committed to uphold this principle when it ratified the UNCLOS on December 10, 1982. The designation "South China Sea" does not imply ownership by China. Just as the Gulf of Mexico is not owned by Mexico, the Sea of Japan is not owned byJapan, and the Indian Ocean is not owned by India. These labels serve as directional references on maps primarily for navigation and travel purposes. China's current justification of historical claims over almost an entire sea is not only alarming and dangerous but also lacks both logical and legal grounding within the current framework of established international relations or circumstances. Additionally, validating past historical claims over land or water dominions may prompt other nations to assert similar claims over presently occupied territories that are protected by existing international laws, potentially jeopardizing global peace. For instance, Turkey would claim territories like Bulgaria, Armenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Lebanon, Jordan…etc. based on historic claims under the Ottoman Empire. And Mongolia could also claim all of China from the historic Mongolian Empire under Kublai Khan. Furthermore, there could be conflicting territorial claims depending on the historical period when such claims are acknowledged-whether during the Medieval period, Renaissance, Early Modern Period, or potentially extending back to the Paleolithic Period. This is why recognizing such historical claims today poses risks within the framework of present international laws, conditions and circumstances. Just to emphasize, one of the significant factors leading to the Ukraine war stems from Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement in February 2022 that Ukraine lacks historical grounds for independent statehood, as he claimed modern Ukraine was entirely shaped by Russia. An obvious historical claim by Putin which lacks solid factual basis in historical reality. Moreover, granting China or any country the authority to claim almost an entire sea runs counter to established laws like those articulated in the UNCLOS, to which China voluntarily allowed itself to be bound by its principles when it ratified the UNCLOS effectively on June 07, 1996. This reality exposes China’s reputation and character regarding adherence to international laws that governs relations among nations. It’s no surprise why China stands alone in its claim, with no global support whatsoever for its assertion over the South China Sea. No country supports China not even from its own strategic partners like Russia, Pakistan or North Korea. These countries may have also surmised about the principle that no single nation could truly claim exclusive ownership of a vast sea or ocean. And this clear zero support for China remains consistent, even if China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, emphasized that freedom of navigation will be respected even if China asserts sovereignty over the South China Sea. The ongoing patriotic defense by the Philippines to safeguard its EEZ in the West Philippine Sea should genuinely be a global concern. Permitting China's expansive claims could set a precedent for other nations to follow, endangering established maritime practices, decrees, and protocols worldwide. In the words of the Philippine Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, China is transforming the entire South China Sea into its own Lake. This fact alone is truly alarming.

In the shadowy depths of geopolitical ambition, Russia and China danced a sinister tango, their steps echoing the demise of the Rules Based Order and the Rule of Law. As Russia's tendrils of expansionism snaked through Europe, China's relentless hunger for hegemony devoured the tranquility of the South China Sea. Like vultures drawn to the scent of decay, Russia and China, birds of prey of the same nefarious feather, found solace in their shared disdain for international norms. While Russia's claws dug into the soil of European sovereignty, China's talons reached across the waves, grasping at the livelihoods and territories of its neighbors. Their alliance, a dark symphony of aggression and ambition, heralded a new era of defiance against the established order. As they soared together, casting shadows of fear and uncertainty, the world trembled beneath the weight of their coordinated malevolence. In the annals of history, the Russia-China tandem stood as a testament to the perils of unchecked power and the folly of complacency. And as they spread their wings of domination, the echoes of their sinister alliance reverberated across continents, a grim reminder that in the realm of geopolitics, birds of prey seldom fly alone.

Actually, those microchips/semiconductors run everything you can imagine. Including military weapons. Considering there is a constant shortage, its actually a damn good reason China is so hellbent on Taiwan. And Taiwan was settled and made into a power in its own right by the Democratic remnants that fled China after losing the war they fought against the Communists - last I checked, America actually cared about nations fighting to be free of Communism. Of course, China didn't care - until Taiwan became a superconductor powerhouse. And its a perfect place to be in missile range of the US.

The fact is, according to the Treaty of Paris in 1898, the Treaty of Washington in 1900 and the Convention Between the United States and Great Britain of 1930 which defined the territory of the Philippines, the western boundary of the Philippines is delimited by 118 degrees east longitude. The Huangyan Island (Scarborough) and Nansha Islands (Spratly) are completely to the west of 118 degrees east longitude. They are not the Philippines' territory.

I think countries like France should stay in their backyards. As for the Philippines ( former American colony), which unfortunately still acts like a colony to this day, it shouldn't be ignored by China. It's unfortunate that the people of the Philippines around that area had to pay the price, but I believe that the South China Sea should be fully monitored by the PRC until American threat diminishes or America demonstrates better behavior. China shouldn't rest or ignore this because America already has the upper hand; they already have Samoa, Guam, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, etc., and not only that, they have hundreds of military bases around China, mostly in Japan and SK. So it would be foolish for China to not monitor these areas and let a country with over 800+ military bases and stronger military turn it to its playground and what America is doing right now isn't helping at all when it comes to improving relationship with China.
