I am Lithuanian and have been following the situation closely for many many months, and here are few notes: - Lithuania was the first EU country to donate vaccines to Taiwan (that's how talks about setting up representative offices even began), then Czechia, Slovakia and Poland followed. - Lithuanian president didn't call the policy or the office a mistake, only the name of the office itself. - Ambassador and (withdrawing) diplomatic staff leaving Beijing are relatively unrelated as former was a protest against the office/it's name and latter was because China tried to downgrade the office to "charge d'affaires" and take/not renew the staff's diplomatic cards or something along those lines, and Lithuania was unsure how their diplomatic immunity would work, so they evacuated them due to safety concerns. Also more less of a note, but addition would be that one Lithuanian MP said that the survey was not exactly about Taiwan in particular, but values based policy in general which can be very vague and subjective. As well as EU itself on multiple occasions has said that Lithuania in no way violated one-china policy. And I personally think that a lot of Lithuanians answered that they don't support the policy or didn't answer the survey / had no opinion about it, was because most of them, especially older generation don't know a single thing about Taiwan, where it's at nor what it is or why it's so important. But those who do, especially in younger generation absolutely love this direction we're taking.

In my opinion EU should stand firmly behind Lithuania. The EU cannot allow even the smallest member country to be attacked. The EU should formally demand that China withdraw from its actions against Lithuania under threat of severe retaliation. Part of the reason why Lithuania's public opinion of the policy is low is because the government is failing to communicate to public why they're doing it. I have had a chance to speak to a couple of people who have the negative view of the policy - they're not aware of Taiwan's and China's history and their relations. The media in Lithuania is focusing pretty much only on the economic losses that result due to China's backlash. So your average Lithuanian is not aware of values that motivate government's position & they're mostly aware of economic damage done by the position. Combine all this with the hatred against the government due to Covid restrictions & you get the numbers you see.

Maybe Lithuanians can see through their own politicians and that they are merely using this diplomatic tug of war in order to distract from their failure with Covid, and to pivot to the west for "investment" and debt forgiveness that they owe to the IMF after their overreliance on western backing that caused their stagnation post 2008 and to have one of the highest suicide rates amongst their population, including children? Not everyone wants war with China: nor do Russians with Ukraine, or Americans for a country that they can't point on a map, it's all political fearmongering by the media, and the fact that you think the media isn't already fixated on Sinophobic Chinese rhetoric makes me ponder my own humanity considerably.

I have occasionally seen this news from the Chinese side (not government outlets), and here are my 2 cents. If China wants every country to name the Taiwan office as Chinese Taipei, then Lithuania naming it as Taiwan is really challenging China to react. and so it did. Otherwise other countries would follow suit if they see Lithuania suffers no consequences doing this. Besides, if Lithuania simply "misnamed" the office, why not just change it back instead of sticking to this policy? It clearly has done it on purpose. While I agree that the wolf warrior speeches are made for Chinese domestic audiences only and seem funny from outside China, it is really no surprise that China reacted this way. Also, I wouldn't count the symbolic support and empty words from America and western countries as "backfire" to China's reaction. The same people and country would criticize China on every other issue regardless. As the saying goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Only Taiwan's aid is substantial and it is expected as Taiwan seeks to gain recognition. What would make it truly a backfire is for these countries to economically aid Lithuania to cover its losses from China's reaction and potentially make it better off than before.

The Russians aren't stupid - they'd have a lot to lose and nothing to gain from such a move. For that matter, China may be able to muster significant military power at home, but they don't have the means to project that power much beyond their borders. As a Lithuanian I would like to note some things: First of Lithuania also donated covid-19 vaccines to Taiwan, it was the first european country to do so. The public does not support Lithuanian policy towards Taiwan, because we don't see any practical help from the west or neighbours at all, only Taiwan gives practical support by investing in Lithuania 200 million euros, sharing experiences etc, but Taiwan's help won't be enough. While west does say nice things about Lithuania or how they express support to Lithuania or how they express concern, such concern express is worthless. Lithuanian public mostly hears how companies are leaving Lithuania, how Lithuania is becoming less attractive to investment, and how europe can't help Lithuania. The president of Lithuania is known for changing his opinion every week or month. President for example would criticize government for not taking any actions to speed up covid-19 vaccination, when after government did something he would say vaccination program is too strict, and after a few weeks later he would say that government on purpose slowed down vaccination rates. Meanwhile he visits restaurants known for being against vaccines and invites antivaxers to presidency as guests. Then president changed his stance towards Belarus leader, he once in an interview said "EU can't hold talks with Belarus' illegitimate leader", 6 days later to a BBC interview he said we should talk to Belarus leader just like Merkel did. And then came the Taiwan question, first president supported Taiwan office name, but after 5 months of supporting it, he called it a "mistake" and blamed the foreign minister for not discussing Taiwan office opening with him (foreign minister denied this and said Taiwan office name was not only discussed, but also coordinated with the president). It is uncertain on who is lying. While the first 2 moments were mostly internal politics, the Taiwan one was discussed a lot in foreign medias which caused Lithuania a bit of an embarrassment. Some people think president changes his opinion to increase popularity, as all of those mentioned moments caused tension with the Lithuanian government. Lithuanian governments are always unpopular, no matter who runs the country, and presidents are always popular, because in Lithuania presidency institution has high trust. Picking fights with an unpopular government can help increase presidents popularity. (Lithuania had never re-elected the same government in it's existence). Lithuanian TS-LKD, LRLS, LP led coalition is unlikely to pull out of this tension by renaming office, pretty much for the same reasons you mentioned.(not only that but Lithuania would would have a massive embarrassment mark if they pulled out).

Disappointed in Estonia’s stance but I completely understand where it’s coming from, as a small nation it is scary as hell to stand up against a global superpower like China. Therefore I will excuse stances like that of small countries like Estonia and praise Lithuania’s brave stance. What I won’t excuse is Germany sucking up to China and Russia in disputes like this. They are a superpower in their own right and shouldn’t have to suck up to undemocratic dictatorships in disputes.

I am German and I hate that we are always cucking towards China. I thought it would be better with the Greens and liberals in the government but in fact its worse. Also we need Russia against China

Germany is doing the right thing by not fueling US Imperialism and avoiding WW3 as much as possible.

So why not just cut off diplomatic relations with the United States? Americans are dictating the world ;)

@@m3c4nyku43 mate clearly China is all bark and no bite. maybe the entirety of Europe should for once take a stance against megalomaniacs like China

It seem to me that China is showing their hand about how insecure their position is. Just an an analogy, if someone steps on your shoe and you start a fight, it's probably because you spent too much of your income on those shoes.

As Lithuanian I think we need to stand by our choice... It does not matter if you support it or not... the move was made and we need to stand by it... of course our president is spinless slug... but he does not have much power so at least we have that... If we will give up or if EU won't support us, China might as well just get into EU and occupy us.... not much difference....

If Lithuania really wanted to upset the CCP they should have named the representative office in Vilnius 'The Republic of China Representative Office', but they didn't. As for Lijian Zhoa calling out Lithuania for Anti-Semitism and Children's right's abuses I'm gobsmacked. The last time that Anti-Semetic crimes were committed in Lithuania, that I know of, it was under occupation and as for Children's right's abuses, I'm pretty sure that Lithuania has outlawed Child labour, unlike China.

no, other EU countires just take Lithuania as a dumb pion, it is Lithuania who takes the risk and pay the bill in a useless conflict with China, and other EU countires continue to make profit with China,
