Cuz vn military has evolved alot plus they have allies too, Im pretty sure that USA wont let china control the whole indo china sea which mostly belong to Vietnam either. And the landscape is pretty suck for china to do a invasion from north to south without a large number of deaths(chinese). Although China has a great army but Chinese citizens just dont have to go to military service in their whole lifes. But in VN half of their population went through the MS at least once, they have skills and pre trained, so once military mobilization was given, all of them would stand up together protect their mother land. Thatd be tough too cuz VN has the largest reserve troops in asea about 4 or 5 mil I dont remember exactly it changes tho. In short, if china want to invade vn then theyd have to do it in at least a many decades to finish the operation
