There are so many great moments in this film. One of my favorites is the look Gittes gives Evelyn (after their escape at the old folks home). While she casually adjusts her hair using the driver's mirror, Gittes is scrutinising her and clearly further unsure of her.

She also touches her left eye in foreshadowing of what’s to come. I was struck with how cool she was. So calm. Earlier she was stuttering and chain-smoking and clearly very nervous. But that night she was very collected. Made me think that the issues with the water didn’t phase her, but when the spotlight was on her daughter and Noah cross, she was extremely nervous. Faye Dunaway nailed this performance.
