Watch the movie yesterday, and I came to this video hoping that it would actually clear up the ending. But this video somehow managed to make things even more confusing.

It's a neo-noir story, which I hate this genre for a reason (sorry) Here's a copied comment explaining everything: Land without water is cheap - land with water is valuable. The unscrupulous Noah Cross was cutting off water to the Valley and buying land cheap thru proxies. Then after he owned most of the land in the Valley he was going to get the government to provide water by incorporating it into the city of Los Angeles which would make the land far more valuable. Hollis Mulwray found out and was murdered. Jake Gittes found out but no one would listen to him. That was the final message - you can't do anything, nobody's going to listen, so forget about it. The parade moves on.

Roman Polanski (the director of this film) has a small part where he cuts Jake's nose (Jack Nicholson) as he's try to climb over the fence/gate to investigate.

The plot of any mystery or detective fiction, from Maigret to Sherlock Holmes, has a back-story. We enter the story with the detective and watch him uncover the back-story. Chinatown has a complex back-story with numerous crimes: fraud, exploitation, coercion, incest, and murder. It grew out of a feud between two men: Hollis Mulwray, who was kind, gentle, and honest; and Noah Cross, who was greedy, unprincipled, and depraved.

I dont think Katherine is mistress of Hollis. I think he was just looking out for her and there's no hint that they're having an affair. I think they're relationship is like father-daughter and evelyn doesn't want katherine to know that her father is her grandfather.

But Hollis knows that Katherine is Evelyn's daughter. Katherine was never Hollis' mistress. He was just socializing with her because was his wife's daughter.@@KBrianO
