Would you believe a temple built 400 years ago without any nails could still be standing? That's the genius behind traditional Japanese carpentry. It uses complex joinery techniques to build anything you can imagine without any nails or screws. Go with nature, or go against nature. That's the lesson of wabi sabi master craftsman Mr. Hanafusa shares with us on this special episode of China Uncensored. I'm an engineer, so I have an understanding of forces....of material resistance to forces....of shape resistance to forces....but I also see as a human who feels with his soul, and I loved this video. My world is so fast there is so little time to produce high quality, I am involved in a process that delivers 'that will do', cluttered by multiple chiefs desires on what the finished product looks like. This video was truly refreshing and I loved it.

🌟You will be blessed to stick to the end🌟 Speaking of history, the majority of Japanese culture originally came from the Korean peninsula. (The ancient ancestors of Korean people, that are connected to the nomatic in Central Asia, had built a civilization predating that of the Han Chinese by 2,500 years.) About 500 years ago, the Japanese invaded the Korean peninsula like the predatory Vikings, and during the chaos of the bloody war, they kidnapped for example, a significant number of pottery artisan masters... (The Japanese had to withdraw back to their islands after experiencing a heavy blow by the superior navy of Korea (then called Chosun) that built the ships WITHOUT any nails. The Japanese used nails for their ship building which is disadvantageous when firing the cannons.) The Japanese emperor who abdicated his throne to his son not too long ago, confessed that he is a descendant of an ancient royal dynasty family from the Korean peninsula. Just a few historical FACTS that the Japanese are not too excited about disclosing... Oh, here's one more Fact relevant to China Uncensored: Suring the 36-year Japanese colonial occupation of the Korean peninsula (1910~1945), the imperialistic Japanese government turned one of the royal palaces in Seoul, Korea into a zoo. Can you imagine the the Buckingham palace or the White House being treated like that?! What is even WORSE is that for decades now the predatory CCP (Chinese Communist Party) has been using the traitorous Pro-China mainstream media in Korea, exploiting this painful history for Koreans in its schemes to colonize the Korean peninsula, by weakening the Korean-Japanese partnership that is disadvantageous to the CCP's predatory schemes!!! How? By brainwashing Koreans with Pro-China propaganda, hiding/minimizing the destructive effects of the Chinese in Korean history, while enraging Korean psyche with exaggerating and or fabricating history and news reports, thus instilling deep seated anti-Japanese, Pro-China sentiment among Koreans. Both the current ILLEGITIMATE socialist regime (that hijacked South Korea through the witch hunt of President Park) with the HELP of the CCP AND so-called mainstream media in South Korea are Pro-China traitors. The CCP MO in Both South Korea and the US is basically the same. I read many years ago that Japanese joiners will spend as much as a third of their time on a project caring for their tools. After watching this, I have no doubt of that. @@jonmartindeiii962the Chinese and Korean joinery for buildings are more simple in nature. This is due to Japan being more prone to seismic activities so the joinery must be crafted so that they withstand things like frequent eartquakes. The handcrafted furnitures just uses various implemented techniques that have been passed down generations and have gotten distinct charasteristics. Think of it as Japanese animation. Even though the animation was heavily influenced and inspired by US, no one calls anime style as American.

Cartooniverse Thought provoking material is an absolutely critical threat to those who benefit so much from the current status quo. That's why psychedelics are illegal. It's why TV is chock full of scripted nonsense so ironically labeled as "reality" TV, it's why everything is "politicalized" these days and thought is funneled and limit into to one of two main, flawed ways of thinking. All of it is in an attempt to prevent new, outside concepts from threatening that status quo, and "we the people" are tricked into supporting it all against our own best interests. Then any time a new "grass roots" movement or idea pops up, it's either a fraudulent "astro-turf" movement, or its quashed and crushed by popular culture to prevent its success. For those who benefit so immensely from the rest of us suffering the current status quo, provoking serious through is tantamount to a kind of snowballing suicide that would get out of their control very quickly.

This show just lies to you... Did you know that almost all temples in Japan replace every single piece of timber every twenty years? That is part of the Shinto-Buddhism religion. That traditional wooden Japanese houses have no value in Japan after 20 years and have to be destroyed and rebuilt. An untreated piece of wood can last 1000 years... I’ll believe that when hell freezes over... I’ve seen companies destroy their modern building and build an exact duplicate building because it was over 20 years old. It is really wasteful, and that practice has been curbed for non-religious buildings in Japan. Yes the carpentry is nice, but there are a whole range of aesthetics of Japanese art you could go into like Wabisabi, this whole minimalist/ old ways are better crap is just utter nonsense to make a show look better without being very knowledgeable on the subjects.

+Obi-Cat Kittenobi I think you can appreciate both. The reason the old crafts are fading is not just because of materialism but because of price (of course, and probably mostly). But at the same time as everybody can afford furniture because of IKEA, something unique is being lost. If rich people keep up the old traditions I don't see anything wrong with that. The money could be also used in a worse way (for instance to buy gold-plated faucets etc...).

This was interesting but I wish it'd gone more in detail into the Japanese joinery itself rather than just interviewing a bunch of really rich americans who kinda seem to fetishise Japanese culture. Quite a few of them kept saying about how simple the joinery was which is quite the opposite of the truth, it's horribly complicated and detailed, that's precisely what makes it so long lasting and beautiful

People like traditional Japanese architecture, not because it is Japanese, but because it attempts to be in harmony with nature. Many years ago I worked in a shop that made wooden things without using nails. We used very precise joinery, and glue Though it was a small shop, we rather mass-produced the things. One person would make one joinery cut, on a table saw, over and over again, in piece of wood after piece of wood. They would pile up. But over and over again the pieces would be passed on to another person, who made another cut on another table saw. One person would glue and clamp one joint over an over, another person another joint. There were only 5 or 6 workers there, but what we did would be considered "mass production," mass production on a relatively small scale. And guess who bought our product? The US government wanted fine woodwork. We made frames for holding photographic plates that were used in specialized cameras that were used for photographing industrial materials in fine detail. The frames had to be rigid, and fit precisely, and hold large pieces of photographic plates, like maybe 20 cm by 20 cm, rigidly and still, without the plates moving, sometimes during long exposure times. Of course chemical-coated film or coated plate photography is part of history now. I don't know how much the government paid the company for this product. The things we made were not considered fine art and we weren't considered artists, or artisans - we were just Workers making products. But we made wooden things very precisely, without nails, using fine joinery.

The West also had half timber houses built out of wooden beams held together by wooden pegs. They have lasted hundreds of years, and can be assembled and disassembled. Some Amish even continue to do so today. Or how about the Shakers who believed that their carpentry was a prayer, and to do it less that the best (even on unseen parts) would go against God. They also had a simple, honest and high quality style.

I read that long time ago in Thailand they built palaces and temples in the same way. A building could be disassembled, moved to another location, and reassembled, using 95% of original parts (I guess 5% were the wooden pegs and similar?)

This was a great story. After 25 years in Japan it amazed me how many highly skilled craftsmen there still are and it was interesting how society supports it. I have visited sword makers that have been in business for hundreds of years. You rarely here about it in the US because they largely avoid advertising especially overseas. The reason why they still have craftsmen even after becoming so technologically advanced is because the Japanese will pay for quality and quality is from dedicated craftsmen. It is truly sad that this culture was largely destroyed in the US after the 1960s.

+Soon Bemat All countries in the world built their buildings without nails at some point because when you know how to do it right it's more convenient than buying nails or making them yourself. The focus of this video is Japan, so what's wrong with it? If you made a documentary about foot ball would you feel the need to cover ALL ball sports from ALL cultures around the world such as Chinese football, Korean, South Asian, American Indian and so on? Relax man, they have never said that other cultures could not do it.

I don't mind them being the most cultured people . I don't really care about the Japanese. All I wondered was why the Japanese were being called Genius??? So can you tell me. Why are they being called genius? If it's because of them building without nails? If so aren't all the east asian countries do that too?

Been going through a lot of the comments and I'm really sorry for some of the extremely rude replies from some of the Chinese people. I also want to clarify some points that people are arguing about. So, for one, most of the Forbidden City (history of close to 1000 years) was built using this technique and Japanese temples simply cannot compare to the sheer size and history of the the Forbidden City. And also contrary to what people may think, this art is not dead in China. In fact due to the massive population of China, the number of people skilled in this trade would definitely out number those in Japan. In addition, the art does not stop just at making plain, undercoated furniture, skilled craftsmen in china would also use a similar technique to embed seashells and other naturally colored materials to create beautiful images without the use of an adhesive. The fact that this art doesn't seem to be very prevalent in china is because Chinese people are just so used to seeing it that it is nothing special to us. Furniture built in such a way can be easily found on the market and the majority of Buddhist temples, even modern ones (just as an example) are built in such a way because that's what a Chinese person expects to see when they walk in. Perhaps this is why the video is more centered around Japanese carpenters because they understand how precious and amazing this art really is and Japanese people appreciate it more while Chinese people just take it for granted.

+RainySundayAttics Yeah, Chinese people take their culture for granted. That is precisely why the culture kept changing through the dynasties; clothing styles mutated, social moes were redesigned, art and literature kept evolving. It's a double edged sword. Pay too much attention to the past and you stop moving forward. Pay too much attention to the future and you lose your roots. Fun fact - the architecture was used in bronze pavilions as well. Famously there's a bronze pavilion in the Summer Palace that the French and British forces couldn't loot because it was made of interlocking pieces and secured with a lock at the top, preventing any bit of it from being moved (outside of the windows).

This art is called "daemokjang" in Korean. There is a long history of Korean architecture being taught to Japan: William Wayne Farris has noted that "Architecture was one art that changed forever with the importation of Buddhism" from Korea. In 587 the Buddhist Soga clan took control of the Japanese government, and the very next year in 588 the kingdom of Baekje sent Japan two architects, one carpenter, four roof tilers, and one painter who were assigned the task of constructing Japan's first full-fledged Buddhist temple. This temple was Asuka Temple, completed in 596, and it was only the first of many such temples put together on the Baekje model. According to the historian Jonathan W. Best "virtually all of the numerous complete temples built in Japan between the last decade of the sixth and the middle of the seventh centuries" were designed off Korean models. Among such early Japanese temples designed and built with Korean aid are Shitennō-ji Temple and Hōryū-ji Temple. Many of the temple bells were also of Korean design and origin. As late as the early eleventh century Korean bells were being delivered to many Japanese temples including Enjō-ji Temple. In the year 1921, eighteen Korean temple bells were designated as national treasures of Japan. In addition to temples, starting from the sixth century advanced stonecutting technology entered Japan from Korea and as a result Japanese tomb construction also began to change in favor of Korean models.]Around this time the horizontal tomb chambers prevalent in Baekje began to be constructed in Japan.

Interesting bias indeed! Because japans architectural methods were taken from China! And yet chinas ancient architecture has stood for thousands of years longer yet we never hear you talking about that now do we? Because you have an anti Chinese sediment and it’s disgusting. Considering these very buildings are based off ancient chinas pagodas.

The hardest part of Japanese woodworking is the tools. The technique of working in this style is very simple once you master a few very basic hand techniques. I do however think it is either in your blood or not but nuthing beats working with what nature made to fill your home, heart, and spirit.

This is Chinese architecture and the dougong and sunmao techniques-japanese carpentry and architecture were all learned from China. These techniques were invented in China thousands of years ago, and there are hundreds of much older Chinese temples, palaces, pagodas that have withstood the world’s deadliest earthquakes for thousands of years. It’s so strange and insulting that a channel calling itself “China Uncensored” would disregard and erase Chinese architecture and its immense global influences like this.

You mean the ones in the video or those anime weebs? I think there´s nothing against living in a foreign style of home if that´s your taste. Personally, I like to copy and blend things to fit my needs. That´s also how cultures were formed for the most part. Personally, I´d love to have a Japanese room. It´s less about the aesthetics and more about the functionality. If you ever visit one, you´ll understand what I mean... It has something relaxing and you can sit in many ways, whereas with our Western type of chairs, we restrict ourselves to just one body position and that´s not good to keep for 10-12h a day...

The funniest shit is all this talk about joins, like they're sacred. Half the stuff you find at IKEA is 100% joins, often more complex than the ones showcased here but just CNC'D instead. It's just the easiest way of making sturdy constructs. These people aren't paying 80k for craftsmanship, they're paying 80k so someone else can't have that table. These guys are laughing all the way to the bank.

@@Apoc2K they are paying more because someone is doing it by hand and I honestly don't know if that's even a justification for it being that expensive or worth it.
