This Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Army Historical Foundation remembers the life and service of Hazel Ying Lee.
Hazel Ying Lee was one of two Chinese American women to join the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs). The second was Maggie Gee.
Hazel Ying Lee was born in 1912 to parents who had immigrated from China to Portland, Oregon. She became hooked on flying after taking a short flight with some friends and saved money for lessons.
She earned her pilots' license in 1932 and joined WASP in 1942. She flew administrative and ferrying missions during her service. She died on November 25, 1944 in a mid-air collision on a final approach to Great Falls Army Air Field. She was 32-years-old and the last of 38 WASPs to be killed will in service.
