Censorship is the huge downfall for animation industry in china. They can't push as good of story because of massive censorship
@Cibanti6 ай бұрын
To put it in perspective: the Chinese government is the huge downfall of China (and when I say China I mean its people). And for better or worse stuff like this only stops with a popular revolution. And even then you better pray an oportunistic asshole doesn't take the spot instead, cause otherwise it's just a restart of the same thing. Sad reality...
@slimjimjimslim59236 ай бұрын
that is sad and yet somehow they manage to make Heaven Official's Blessing and The Founder of Diabolism. Both are just dripping with sexual tension but they manage to ride that grayline enough to escape being banned. And yet anyone that watched it clearly is like "yep this is totally a male-on-male anime", or I think in china they called is Danmei.
@type0negative7776 ай бұрын
the censorship is quite weird sometimes actually. a lot of donghua I've watched will even have vulgar sex jokes that aren't subtle at all, and yet some parts of the show will still be censored

@@slimjimjimslim5923 WAIT HOB has a donghua?! I know now 😮 thanks I still can't get over the manhua art style now I'm off to look for it thanks again- (found it on Ani-Mi Asia channel for those interested!) Edit: yes they are called Danmei aka BL/Yaoi/Shonen Ai. I think the biggest reason, the two IPs you mentioned passed the strict censorship to be produced as platonic bromance stories exactly because the original art and stories are so good and they have no other big taboos, and they are both xianxia which is very lucrative and popular as a genre in East Asia. Even the original novels have already been written in euphemistic ways if not brushed over, except for the obvious tags and the manhuas are even more 'innocent' 😂

@@type0negative777 from what I seen, the Chinese gov is ok if they were straight and not too explicit but anything queer is a big no no. A scene one guy groping and making out with a girl is fine. Two doods kissing would have gotten you banned. Now if you write a same sex scene that will land you in prison. Happened to a few Danmei writers over the last 20 years in China. Overall I’m glad Chinese animation was able to grow toward creativity rather than being the arm of the communist party constantly drilling state ideology into our heads lol. Wrong, it is because anime had decades to develop will donghua actually just start flourish in 2017-2018. Donghua copy nothing, even Fog hill of five elements, like here, it is ink wash painting of China, and they already used in animation 80s and 90s. Anime rarely has this kind of art, they even tried to learn for it from China. Most 2d coloring and art also different with anime such as the one use in Scissor Seven, A Will Eternal, The Legend of Hei, The King's Avatar, Link Click..... BTW, donghua also mainly on 3d and exploring it instead of 2d. Full 3d, that's anime series rarely use. Stuff like Battle Through The Heavens, Ling Cage, Record of a Mortal's Journey To Immortality, Soul Land, Soul Land 2, Perfect World, The Demon hunter, Renegade Immortal, The Island of Siliang, Swallowed Star, Jade Dynasty, Big Brother, The Ravages of Time, Degenerate Drawing Jianghu, Forty Millenniums of cultivation, My heroic husband, Back to the Great Ming, The First Order, Immortality, The Great Ruler, Dragon Prince Yuan, Martial Universe, Jun You Yun, Young Brewmaster's Adventure, Great Journey of teenagers and more... As a kid I loved a Chinese donghua called Nezha, which was a kids show about a boy who was born from an egg who skinned the brother of his love interest and is forced to commit suicide as atonement, and is later reborn from a flower

in domestic discussions, people tend to believe that the biggest thing holding back Donghua is commercialization models, studios having a hard time securing funding, and producers want to realize profits, keeping series going sometimes require sacrificing pacing or business. Sometimes projects with artistic but not commercial potential get canceled (most recently 汐塔 and 幽明志 announced last year but both suspended due to ByteDance cutting funding). China by no means lack people of vision and talent, and there are many great indie animated shots posted to Bilibili, but financially making them into big projects is the challenge.

Honestly. What i think is a good example of good chinese short animation is the Honkai Impact 3rd animated shorts
@LS-tk7hp7 ай бұрын
the main problem for them for one i think is accesibility and language, since theyre mostly made by billibilli and therefor not for western markets, some of them dont even have subtitles let alone dubs... and as great as the animation can be, watching something without the ability to understand anything just doesnt make sense... im to this day trying to find somewhere to watch shuo feng po shen zhi

Hope you can check another China's animation called The Legend of Hei. It started of as shorts with 28 episodes. Then it got a full length movie, now second season of shorts ended, and I heard they are work on sequel for the movie. Plus they have a spin-off manga too.
@Funcakes207 ай бұрын
You may not be aware of this, but the US Department of Defense has to approve every Hollywood movie before it comes out, and they change anything that portrays the US govt/military in a bad light. The Transformer movies by Michael Bay are a very good example. Don't make this a Chinese thing lol.
@claytoncallaway64127 ай бұрын
they only do that for movies that use military equipment
@lanzer227 ай бұрын
This is completely false. There is no such system except for when you wish to collaborate with the DoD for footage and equipment, etc. Many movies depict America and / or its military in a negative light. Movies such as Charlie Wilson's War to classics like Full Metal Jacket would never have been made otherwise. The former being a movie that highlights the corruption of the military industrial complex on the highest level. There is an entire branch in DoD for influencing Hollywood but it's mainly for propoganda and not a censorship board of any sort. Wiki has an article on Military Entertainment complex.
at least there is no fan service in donghua and that is huge.

Great video. Have been sceptical about all anime outside of japan for decades, but I'm glad I give it a try sometimes. I hope that over time they'll develop more of their own tropes and style, like how avatar is clearly a western anime. And less censorship of course.
@TheExtraterrestrial996 ай бұрын
Cultivation is the tropes. And censorship is a myth, even the "white blood" here, it is edited meme by people on twitter. Censorship is there, but not as crazy as people think. Many anime or western show that's popular able to air in China because it get through the censorship... Censorship has nothing to do with creativity, it is just there to filter explicit content, and you don't need depend on explicit content to be creative or success, that's just fan service because your content didn't good enough to attract audiences....LOL Btw, Chinese animation is flourish on 3d, not 2d...

I doubt Te Wei is Chinese Walt Disney.. The Wan Brothers is bigger... Btw, cultural revolution ban animation production because the cost is high and Chinese government wanted to focus on other industry. After cultural revolution end, the animation industry actually not flourish yet, because only a few animation studio available and working on project from government TV channel. Only until 2010, Chinese government officially allow private companies to invest, produce and air their animation on the own platform, hence the starting of the rise of Chinese animation.

Chinese anime will have some of the most jaw dropping fights but their "normal ep" animation quality is fcking terrible, spare me great lord has great opening because of "Hiromatsu Shu" but the actual donghua is trash and the story doesn't help either along with the terrible VC. the voice acting is garbage in most donghua. finding a good donghua is almost as rare as finding a "real" diamond, most of it is 3d cgi garbage dump, no, almost all of it it is cgi slop probably 99%. But mfs ignore that and talk about the 1%.

This may be just because donghua has only been on the anime fan radar for like three or four years with Nezha, Immortal King, Fabulous Beasts, et cetera, but it seems as if a majority of those spotlighted are about Chinese mythology, with every other donghua referencing Heaven. Of course, that may change in the span of a decade or two, yeah. X3
