I once had a bad shoulder. You can sleep while sitting. But it is not very nice for everything else than a nap. I suppose they slept sitting while the thing around the neck was rested on something. I can imagine them to have special sleeping places or something like blocks or sticks which can take the weight from the victim.

While I fully support prison should also be a social rehabilitation institution it should also be a parsons worst nightmare come true for the worst of us and it should be on display for all to see. Reward the rehabilitated and severely punish the socially worthless. IE save the ones that can be saved and get rid of the ones who can't or refuse.
