smutpow Foot binding was mainly done by female relatives rather than males and was never thought of as beautiful but high-class, graceful and cute as anything that looks tiny does - I guess, in which it forces women to walk with a lotus gait which simply put, means butt swaying (much like high heels - can you see the resemblance just that instead of an artificial heel and pointed tip, a foot bidden woman would have her own harden flesh and pointed tip for toes). Though, I can't recall a quote relating to foot binding, but it went on about how the foots mysterious nature comes from it being covered that peaks mens' curiosity but when removed; its magic dies which comes along with a fowl stench and grotesque image of the mutilated feet. Also the reason the Manchurian court ladies had those platforms shoes was because they tried to mimic the lotus feet but weren't allowed to perform foot binding on themselves thus the platforms were a compromise which somewhat spread to Europe.

From what I've read, the girls bind their feet around 10 yrs old or younger. The binding restrict the growth of the feet. And years later, you don't have 10 toes or toe nails, you have only what looks more like a hoof rather than a person's foot. Yes, that's the picture I still have in my head till today!

Koren and Japanese's traditional clothing is learned from China. We hate QING DYNASTY and that style of clothing.. HAN FU( HAN TANG SONG MING DYNASTIS) is our REAL traditional clothing. jakefly8 This whole Han only thing is stupid. I support the Hanfu movement but its not reason to hate the Qipao or changsan. Though they mave have originate from Manchu rule, they were worn by both Han and Manchu peoples with the Modern tightfitting modern qipao very likely created by Han Chinese. It's very much both a combination of Han and Manchu. Afterall, China is not a ethnicity but a nation and the Han people are more of a culture than ethnicity. After all which Han Chinese are you? Shanghianese, Hakka, Hoklo, Catoneese plus dozens of other subgroups of Han Chinese. It's stupid to grip over petty things.

Personally hate Qing dynasty's Fashion, so corny and losing the elegant of fairy-like clothing. I think it is because the northerns turned to hold the power of government since around Ming dynasty and made some culture of southern disappeared. I like zhou to Tong dynasties.

Considering the Qing emperors descended from Jurchens which were, I think, nomadic people like the Mongols and the Khitan, I don't think aesthetics were a big concern for them.

From what I've heard in the Qing dynasty the Machu tried to abolish foot binding, which was a practice of the Han. However they were unsuccessful and it took a lot more time to abolish the practice. Some of the women who bound their feet are still alive!

LV427 Modern qipao is created by Han people…Han people have forgotten Hanfu at that time, and they took the qipao as a national suit in last century, even say it's Han people traditional costumes, and then qipao became very popular in this country. Poor women often needs to work on the field or perform house work so they cannot afford the "luxury" of foot binding. I guess being poor has its advantage sometime.

Nationalism is stupid. Chinese culture, like all others, is shaped by innumerable foreign elements and conquerors - you can never have a 'pure Chinese' ethnic clothing of your own. The cheongsam doesn't become better or worse because of who it came from. Killing people who refused to obey was normal at the time, Chinese people did it to each other, too.

Why is Hanfu no longer worn in this century? Quite complicated.1. Banned in Qing dynasty. Forced to chose between adopting Manchu fashion or execution.2. A lot of people can't afford it.3. Not convenient. Big sleeves? Long robes?4. Ancient people all had long hair. So a short haired guy wearing Hanfu would sort of ruin the temperament/ beauty.5. We don't even know the body posture and manners of ancient people. How they stand, sit, bow, etc.6. Wearing Hanfu would lead to people asking you if you are filming a drama or cosplaying.7. People on the street would either judge you or ask for a picture as if you're an animal from the zoo.

Male clothing of Korea, especially higher social classes(officials and scholars)'s, has actually been influenced by Ming clothing. However, I want you to know that earlier Ming female dress was the result of all the rage for Korean style clothing in Yuan dynasty. :)

I want to add something. Some people think Qipao(Cheongsam) is traditional Hanfu or characteristic of Chinese. But that isn't true. that is not Hanfu. Real Hanfu imply Hantsu's(original chinese) sentiment. Hanfu express chinese woman's elegant and beuty. slim and upright. If you see the hanfu, You can imagin that hanfu like celestial maiden clothe. In contrast original qiao didn't conform that. in modern, qipao became slim by reflection of chinese beuty. anyway qipao is manchurian clothe like wise Yuan dynasty cloth also isn't hanfu, that is mongolian colth. If you saw "Chinese fashion 1 to 2" video, you can find difference of hanfu and them. One more thing, this video showed and said when Ming dynasty, woman used to were two piece and big wide skirt all period of ming dynasty. that is wrong. because that cloth also didn't have Hanzu's beuty. that style just considerd eastern barbarian's(korean) style, not hanfu. like mongolian clothe style spread while yuan dynasty. this korean(that time called goreyo) style spread at the close of the yuan dynasty. When Ming dinasty, this style stay just short period. "The Hungchih ti" who one of the legendary sage chinese emperor ordered to change woman's clothes because that style is so barbaritic and didn't fit Hantsu's spirit. By his effort people changed there trend and wore original Hanfu, finaly, woman's style could return to Hantsu's style. so Chinese woman wore big skirt while all Ming's Dynasty period is incorrect. Ming's people throw awaied mongolian, korean style and inherited Hantsu's true beuty. I want to this comments help for people to understand Chinese Hanfu.

That was one good thing about the Manchu they were not into the tortuous foot binding fetish that was among the Han ethnic group broadly from the Song dynasty to into the Republican period. What a hateful brutal fetish involving breaking young girls feet, binding them, a life of crippling movement and pain and even rotting feet in old age. ;( . Despite many great things about the Chinese culture this is one of its low points that should be talked about. All Chinese culture is not how great everything was. Actually, the qipao and bound feet never occurred together: the qipao was a Manchu dress, but Manchu women never bound their feet - foot binding is a native Han invention that started as early as the Song dynasty. So the Manchus had it right on both counts - as usual. :) Qing FTW!

I believe those "little shoes" worn with bound feet were called Lotus shoes because they bound the feet, from infancy, of the women with the goal for them to look like Lotus blossoms. I am surprised you didn't discuss feet binding more since it was such a huge part of Chinese fashion and controversy and while it is banned now, there are still older women whose feet were bound as children who cannot walk unassisted while they live out their life while suffering from irreparably deformed feet. All of this to please a man ..... By the way, did the Chinese use shifts or corsets in any period for undergarments? What were their undergarments of choice? British fashion often included crotchless undergarments to facilitate using the restroom. Did the Chinese do the same?

wubaduckie both Ming and Joseon started with the fall of Mongol Empire and were close from the start, with Joseon becoming tributary state for the Ming. They also fought together against the Japanese invasions in late 1500s. When Manchus took over China and established the Qing dynasty, they invaded Korea and forced Joseon into a new tributary status, but Koreans never liked Manchus much, so they mostly kept preferring the stuff that had come from the Ming even after the dynasty was gone.

They wore such comfortable clothes in Chinese history. They probably slept in those clothes. In this day in age comfort is unimportant to looking fancy.

Ok. You are talking about ethnicity. Ethnicity is basically a modern form of 'tribe'. A group of people with a common language and ancestry. An ethnicity can have its own country like Japan or Korea, but a country can have many ethnicities like how China has Han, Mongolians, Tibetans etc. Europe also has the same thing. You can be from Spain but also be ethnically Basque.

To wear the "Flower pot shoes", you gotta break the bones of your feet and tie them together (it was really painful). It was a custom for all females to wear because it would make them more ladylike (tied feet so you have to take small steps)
