Kenya's Madaraka Express is celebrating its first anniversary. The Chinese-funded railway line has spurred economic growth. It has also eased traffic congestion, providing a fast and reliable mode of transport between the capital, Nairobi, and the port city of Mombasa. CGTN's Robert Nagila joins us live from the Nairobi terminus.

Sure, sell your soul for a train line, don't look at the expences in the far future. In abbout 30 to 50 years, Kenya will basiccally be owned by China. I hope I'm wrong, but history and common sense learns that it doesn't look well for Kenya.

It is now October 2019, more than two and half years since the completion of the railway. It is worthwhile to update this video.

With connectivity the Kenyans can now enjoy the 21st century standard of living. China's wealth and technology is shared through connectivity. The Kenyans look more handsome, beautiful, nice and respectable now than they were 5 years ago. Thanks to high tech with supportive wealth from China which bring Kenya as a new game changer of the 21st century.

01:40 600,000 tonnes (0.6 million tonnes) of SGR freight is low for a year. Its maximum freight haulage is estimated to be 21 million tonnes a year according to its listed specifications krc.co.ke/salient-features-of-the-standard-gauge-railway/. In the USA CSX transportation in the 1980's would move over ten 10,000 ton unit coal trains or over 100,000 tons of coal a day over its mainline. That is over 700,000 tons of freight a week! Metric "tonnes" and USA "tons" are different measurements and are spelled differently. Metric tonnes are 10% more than USA tons, for ruff comparisons they can be considered similar. USA tons are based on the pound and are 2000 pounds. Metric tonnes are based on kilogram and are 1000 Kg that converts to 2200 USA pounds. Coal freight provides a lot of tonnage in just a few trains so the comparison of SGR freight with North American railroad coal train tonnage might be considered to be unfair, but there is a large mining operation along the Kenya SGR that should be contributing significant freight tonnage traffic both in out going ore and in coming supplies needed for mining. That mining operation was one of the key viable reasons the British built the meter gauge railroad in Kenya 1896-1901 that caused such construction problems the British Parliament was constantly occupied with its issues with some calling it the "Lunatic railroad to nowhere". Lets hope the SGR (standard gauge railroad 4-ft 8-1/2-inch 1.435-meter) overtime becomes a thriving heavy use freight line with lots of profitable tonnage. The rail bed looks to be extremely well compacted and should hold up to heavy axle loads and consequently still provide a smooth ride for the popular passenger trains. A concern is the low maximum axle load given as 25 tonnes for freight in comparison to North American railroad standard gauge maximum freight axle load for interchange traffic that is a lot higher at 30 metric tonnes (286,000 pound car) www.quorumcorp.net/Downloads/Papers/RailwayCapacityOverview.pdf. The Union Pacific allows higher weight cars of 315,000 pounds with axle weighs of over 35 metric tonnes and there is a a push to allow these higher weight cars for interchange traffic. I'm looking forward to the time a quick 1st class passenger train provides big window views of Kenya as it passes from the coast to lake Victoria. The specification table krc.co.ke/salient-features-of-the-standard-gauge-railway/ lists the railroad can adopt some type of fast or "high speed" passenger trains and is designed for double height container loads this would also allow for double deck passenger trains. High speed may mean some type of +160 kph passenger train possibly with tilt and double deck, which could fit very well and greatly increase passenger train capacity without taking up more station platform length or track time. After reading the Kenya railroad history krc.co.ke/history/ I found out the British did construct and finish the meter gauge railroad from the coast to lake Victoria during the period from 1896-1901. I had the impression the British gave up on building the "Lunatic railroad to nowhere" after getting over a little farther than half way to lake Victoria ending at the Kenya capitol of Nairobi.

Professor Peter Kagwanja says "...the fastest bus is 80KPH so it has cut the distance from Mombasa to Nairobi astronomically" 🤣🤣🤣 did you misspeak professor??? How can a train cut distance? Distance is not a variable quantity my good professor.

Kobo ...train route is not thw sane as bus route. Train tack probably have more direct path to destination where as the bus might have to make detour.

The distance in terms of theology, as in how distant do I feel the people and culture of that city our from me. That distance feels three times closer than it did previous to the standard gauge passenger train RELIABLY connecting over 480 Km together.

@@michelng5630 That is correct. Historians often say the Automobile made America smaller. They don't mean it literally reduced distances in America. They mean it made America feel smaller because distances could be traveled so much faster. The SGR is doing the same for Kenya.

Second hand clothes have a complete supply chain. In China, the first step is to buy used clothes from the people. The second step is to sort at the sorting station, select the better ones and recycle the poor ones into raw materials. The third step is to classify, clean, disinfect and pack the selected clothes. Then we sell them to you. In fact, new clothes are also processed like this. You can wear them with new clothes
