Why is no one commenting on how the boy in red jumper was such a little gentleman? He had been serving and pouring orange juice to the girl beside her (while the rest had to be served by adults). He also did not complain or snatch the chips from the girl beside when she tried to get all, and when told they can bring more chips back home later, he shook his head. But we clearly know he loves it. And he has the most positive attitude! He tried to convince the girl to try new things, that means to him, most of it should be new and weird for him too but he ate them nonetheless.

It's really interesting to see how cultures vary, I grew up in a south american household and exotic (as well as regular) fruits and vegetables were obligatory in my and many others' meal plans, in salads or as snacks with dips and whatnot there were so many presentations. It came as a culture shock when i saw that for so many people from different continents this was not the case and their meals (most lacking in healthy food options) in a way made me uncomfortbable since so many of us got yelled at for not finishing our fruits and vegetables 😂

I know few words in mandarin but most of them revolve around food, and the usual yes, no etc. so yeah it’s fun to try to pick out the words you do know in a real world situation, when you have subtitles to correct you.

Actually the kid's lunches in America don't typically include orange juice unless it is a breakfast. They are usually only given milk, but if you are lactose intolerant, they will give you apple juice as an alternative. While there are chicken nuggets and hamburgers, they don't serve peanut butter sandwiches anymore because of too many kids with peanut allergies. But I agree with the kids that the portions are too small. Maybe not for the younger kids, but they feed the same amount to the older teens and they usually come home starving.

True, but texture is just as important in Chinese cuisine. Perfect example, my absolute favorite street breakfast jian bing guo zi. Soft thin crepe with egg on one side, salty sweet spicy sauce with crispy fresh veg (my fav are green onion, lettuce and cilantro, and Chinese pickled mustard leaves for some acidity) and either you tiao (think large Chinese churro/doughnut) or deep fried wonton sort of thing. Oh and I like the added mystery sausage. You get chewy, tender, greasy, fresh crispy, and crunchy. Dammit now I’m craving jian bing.
@babadukk
@babadukk 5 күн бұрын
@nottheoneyourelookingfor0504 the combination of similar textures is likely the reason why they chose to add the chips. Just to me, it evokes a very special memory of watching my American friends put chips in their sandwich and trying it out for the first time.

Public elementary school lunches are bad but not this bad 😂 Chicken nuggets would have come with a vegetable and milk is served with every meal. Chocolate milk is option too. The burger would have included Fries and the carrots would include Ranch dressing to dip. Also the cheese sandwich is offered if child doesn’t want or is allergic to what’s being served. It used to be given a cold cheese sandwich if a child couldn’t pay for lunch. Thankfully kids receive free lunch these days. Middle school & high school the lunches get better options.

Couple reasons. Cheese just wasn’t a big cultural food in China. Not many dishes use dairy. But also that lactose intolerance is rampant. Sure, things are changing because of the western influence, but just look at what they describe as their typical lunches. Steamed buns/rice as carbs. Stir fried meat/veg. They eat plenty more veg in China than in America. One thing I experienced since starting seeing my Chinese grillfiend is that having personal individual dishes is largely the exception. Family style is the way it’s done. Basically they prepare a number of dishes (eg if there’s 4 people they’d serve at very least 4 dishes plus rice and or noodles. Everyone has a chance to have a bit of each dish, so you end up with a great variety. Having main, side and drink is probably strange for the kids.

I can say that I’ve never bought food at my high school cafeteria. Coming from an asian household, I never had a reason to lineup at my cafeteria since my parents always made food for the week or there’s leftovers in the fridge. I will always appreciate my parents for drilling the importance of healthy eating, spending money wisely, and that home cooking is superior.
@BlazeMiskulin
@BlazeMiskulin 20 күн бұрын
American lunches have gotten away from the very-processed foods because of FDA regulations and the requirements for receiving federal funding to subsidize school lunches. School lunches are *much* more healthy than they were when I was going to school in the 70s and 80s. HOWEVER , informal surveys of cafeteria staff indicate that about half of the food that is served ends up in the trash. The requirements--and *restrictions*--mean that school cafeterias are forced to cook food that they *know* the kids won't eat. (For a couple years, I worked for a school district in the same building as their central kitchen. Michelle Obama's food rules meant that the district had to stop buying fresh food from local farms (it couldn't be certified to meet the requirements, because the small farms couldn't afford the cost of testing), so they had to revert to processed foods from major vendors.) Ask any "lunch lady", and they'll tell you that they'd rather served a less-healthy meal that kids will actually eat than one that's super healthy, but ends up in the garbage. There are *far* too many kids who don't get good meals at home and don't understand how to eat healthy. They see something weird in the lunch line and are afraid to eat it. So... they go without *any* food. I'm happy that your parents taught you about healthy eating. I wish more parents did. But... If it's a choice between eating healthy and eating at all? Let the kids have chicken nuggets and PB&J.

Hey @CantoMando How about having Chinese kids/students try dishes/snacks from your actual home country 🇨🇦 like poutine, all dressed or ketchup chips, Nanaimo bars, Montreal-style bagels and smoke meat instead of American food. Also, Sheldon seems to refrain from saying he’s American, but Mike always seems to be implying that he is American / grew up in the US the way he portrays himself when speaking to the Chinese kids/ students… the question is why??

@ I’m not only talking about this video, but in general. Go watch other videos where they are having Chinese college/uni students try American snacks, Mike would say something like “these are the chips flavours WE have in America” or “in America, WE eat a lot of fast food, that’s why WE are the most obese nation on the planet”. He would say WE (Americans) as opposed to THEY (to refer to Americans). In other videos they would say they are Asian Americans / Chinese Americans . They even title their videos like “Asian Americans call their parents to say they are quitting their jobs for KZbin” etc… Even in this video, they are saying something like “the Chinese have their milk in bags, whereas we have them in cartons”. CantoMando are from Ontario where milk in bags also exist!! 😓

@@vanessaland5090 Canadians will do anything to avoid being mistaken for Americans, especially in today’s political climate. But here, you have CantoMando purposely and deliberately portraying themselves as Chinese Americans instead of being who they really are, Chinese Canadians. In all these videos where they have Chinese students try different things from America, they will always make references that they are from America, the country not the continent of the Americas because they would say in Chinese 我們在美國… which means “We, in America…” and 美國 is the United States of America, they could have easily said 我們在加拿大 instead for Canada🇨🇦 or to an extend use 美洲 for the Americas if they want to reference to the American continent in general.

@@lucwaide7131I think it’s also a factor of not wanting to confuse them. Most non-North Americans basically think Canada has the exact same culture as the United States. Barring their love for guns and war (and much of the southern states food and hospitality) I hate to say it but we Canucks are pretty much the same. In murica, they have the Mexicans to their south. We have the Quebecers to our east(ish). Difference is, Mexican food is FAR superior to French-Canadian.

I was born in Canada and I love eating cheese and when I went to China I was craving cheese so I asked my aunt to buy some from the grocery and she did. When I took a bite it was sweet like candy which I wasn’t used to and said « why is the cheese sweet ?» and she said « isn’t cheese supposed to be sweet ? ». Then I realized that both of my parents and other people who grew up in China don’t like the taste of cheese. Might be a cultural thing.

I beg to differ on the PB&j. Too many peanut allergies. You're lucky if it's allowed at the elementary schools. Friday's is usually pizza.

That Mao frame picture and Chinese red knot seems to be placed there intentionally just for "being stereotypical“... but in reality few Chinese people do that nowadays. I really don't like this act.

I live in a Chinese household and there is absolutely no picture of Chinese Trump.. er I mean Mao… We do have some of the traditional decorations though. The red knot and door hangings. And yes, the oven is storage for pots and pans.
