The Chinese lion dance is usually performed by members of a kung fu school. These are usually students who also train in the martial arts. To become a member of the lion dance team, students must practice harder and put in more effort in order to be good at both lion dance and kung fu. A kung fu school that has many lions and performers is a very competent and flourishing school.
People booking a lion dance for Chinese New Year should do so early so they can reserve their time. Usually, during the week of the CNY most lion dance troupes have performances daily. At a typical event, the party booking the lion dance will place lettuce or bok choy along with a red envelope for the lion dance. The performers will then use the lion costume to mimic the emotions and expressions of a curious feline. The Chinese drums and cymbals follow the motions of the lion by playing beats that create drama and are synchronized exactly with the movements of the lions. The red envelope is kept by the lion as a reward for their efforts while the lettuce is ceremoniously spat out to shower the guests with good luck.
