You are underestimating the power of the long range detectors. If you point one towards, say, South Africa, it will indicate "diamonds". They are not designed for short range pickup.

Industrial electronic products I use were made in Europe then most production moved to China. Now a lot of their stuff is made in Indonesia and Vietnam because I suspect the labour costs are lower in these countries than China.
