Here's one way the Chinese do it. When my (American) brother and his wife wanted to buy a house in their early 20's, my parents footed the down payment to get them started. My Chinese GF has relatives back in China, and when one of them wanted to send their young son to an expensive, exclusive music school, the ENTIRE EXTENDED FAMILY kicked in money to help them. I had a large extended family growing up but no way my many aunts, uncles and cousins would ever have chipped in money to help my brother buy that house. It wouldn't be something anyone would ever have considered! But that's how the Chinese roll...

In Japan it is illegal for a foreigner to own land on his own. This is because land is rare and should be available for the people of Japan. A foreigner can buy a house; but will still need to rent the land. Similar policies should be considered in certain geographic parts of Canada that are designated “housing crisis” zones.

As a Chinese Canadian who spend equal years of my life in both Qingdao and Vancouver (a few more in Vancouver to be precise), I feel really sad and also a bit scared seeing what's happening in Vancouver and all the opinions about us. My family earned the money without any involvement with CCCP, which makes their work extremely hard because its in China. I never get to spend my childhood with them, and when I did, I see them working day and night. We immigrated to Canada legally and paid the money for it. My parents bought their house and one of my childhood home legally with the money they gain from working hard. Now we are facing white people pointing middle finger at us from their cars, shouting out dirty words at us on the skytrain, slamming the door in front of us for no reason. We are seeing hate crimes toward Asians rise, and seeing other Asian Canadians such as Korean and Japanese wearing a sign that reads "I'm not Chinese" when they go to supermarkets. China is now trying to make all the private business become government's business, meaning my parents are facing the worries of not only possibly losing all they created since their teenage years, but also the guarantee of jobs with a fair income for their current employees.(losing job at their age would mean likely no job in the future to support their families). For me, I don't even feel that comfortable living in China not only because of my hereditary nose illness, but also because I don't relate to the culture entirely (I can't even write a full sentence in Chinese without checking dictionary at least once). White Canadians treating us this way put me and my family in a position were we feel anxious and scared and sometimes helpless. Whenever I face these racist things on the streets, my first emotions are not even anger although I'd rather it be anger, but fear triggered by them that I can't even control. Growing up in a white neighborhood, I was isolated and also faced bullying multiple times before I entered a high school where there's Chinese Canadians and French Canadians. I received no help from teachers who just sit and watch everything happen, and no help from already stressed parents who are often not in Vancouver for month leaving me taking care of a young brother at home alone. I choosed to be alone only because I've heard too many stories of abuse from Chinese students who home-stayed in a white household. but I worked my way through to be here now in a US university away from everything altogether. What have I done to you to deserve this? What bad things my parents have done to deserve this? Can you tell me please?

Tell me why a Chinese person shouldn't be able to have his/her children live in a place with fresh air and water, when him/her immigrated both righteously and legally, bought their house legally, earned their money with clean hands, and have a child who would otherwise need to go to hospital every other day for health issues that strengthen by polluted air? We never complain for the extreme difficulty having to work our way out clean in totalitarian country, we never complain about all the indirect discriminations. Just to let you know, the Chinese immigrants home owners in Canada do not pay any substantial tax income because they don't have an income in Canada. Their income is from overseas so they only report low income which is lower than the average local Canadian tax money. This is bad for locals because the immigrants reap the benefits (bc their investments appreciate in value) with no disadvantages. They get the same public transport, resources, education and healthcare and stuff that is from local income tax. The federal gov definitely needs to shut down the immigrant investor program. I am from a Taiwanese family, hardworking and from a working class. My parents don't own a house either and we don't have a lavish lifestyle like the recent rich Mainland Chinese immigrants. I'm a gen Z Canadian and we young people can't even afford to buy a home for ourselves.

I have known many people who sold their condos in China and bought really nice houses in Canada. I believe they were middle (maybe upper middle) class people in China.

The price of house rock after 1997. Any foreigner came in HK, and spend 6,5 millions HKD in house can get resident HK and after 7 year's permant resident HK, but how much foreigner do this ? not so many, proof Hong kong not stop this. They stop this after they rise to 10 millions, chinese still come, and after they stop totaly for chinese. As foreigner we are free to travel everywhere without visa, and make what we want with our money, we no need really to get permanent residency.

I have been there three years ago to take BC Ferry to mainland. It is pretty for sure; but that is only good for retirees. Young people can't find high paid jobs there even in the mainland. China in general is good place for retirees; the living cost is much cheaper than BC and nearly everything is reachable in walking distance. You can choose a city which is cleaner and fewer population than Nanning to live.

However, I don’t like the money laundering, no matter where it comes from... casinos were lobbied for years, and a large part of when/where the problem originated. ... and a corrupt right wing stronghold of BCLiberals who, along with local real estate agents cooked up this whole scheme decades ago to sell off British Columbia. I don’t like how some characterize people of Asian ethnicity with blatant ignorant bigotry. I just don’t feel comfortable with oversimplification of complex issues being framed against a particular ethnicity - The Chinese have been here since 1871. They were critical in building Canada’s transcontinental railway. Many of my close friends & colleagues who happen to have Chinese -Canadian ethnicity are 5-6 generations Canadian. Our property market has had so many problems with the focus being on faux-luxury lifestyle homes for far too long ... rather than sensible comfortable modest middle class homes. This is a global problem, from Dubai- Mumbai to Shanghai- Abu Dhabi etc etc. I have watched local real estate agents become escalated to Czars. Many Gwai-los of an older generation (ie. ours) have been complicit in creating this unaffordable millionaires’ playground.

The Canadian sellers chose to sell their homes to the Chinese buyers. Should the real estate market collapse one day than another Canadian would be making a video laughing at those Chinese suckers. BTW, your video gives a misconception that it was the mainland Chinese that started this real estate rush. Back in the 1990s, or earlier, it was the Hongkongers that stated this buying spree when they migrated to Vancouver to escape the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997. The mainland Chinese buyers are the second wave that push prices further north.

Yes, of course it benefits the sellers who are typically older or retired (maybe they need the money and maybe they don't). The damage is done to the people who don't own a home already and are earning a typical median income. Their income now buys them considerably less house than before. So it's not all win-win. If a crash happens there will be a lot of suckers of all varieties. It sounds like there's a huge real estate bubble in China. Don't people complain about housing being too expensive there? Something interesting is that it is illegal for a Canadian (or any foreigner) to buy property in China. I'm sure there are nice places to live there but we're not allowed :( The government in Canada has the opposite stance to China and would like to increase population very quickly. In China there used to be the one child policy because population was growing so rapidly. The attitude is if you're not growing you're dying.

Actually, it is all about investment, my colleague, who is a white person working as engineer in my company, owns three properties; however, he told me his friend grown up in the same neighbourhood working as with an investment company, did not believe buying property was a good idea compared with buying stock, he keeps renting until being priced out.

The Chinese were originally brought over as essentially slaves to build the railroads, which was fundamental to building the wealth and society Canada has today. Now fast forward a hundred years as owners of manufacturing industries across Canada and the US get even richer when they realize that they can extract even more wealth by moving manufacturing/jobs out of the country, and in into Mexico and China. It gets confusing or frustrating when you realize the money we pay for these goods produced in China and Mexico, goes into foreign hands, then right back into purchasing property in Canada. What’s more, you do not get easily bored when you have a précise goal, appreciate your own company, and enjoy the company of the close few around you. Also, I would have thought that the area shown in the video is just the suburb of a larger more vibrant CLEAN city. Nothing better for one's soul than alternating almost daily between a quieter and heavenly suburbs and the vibrancy of CLEAN cities. Compare to East coast and middle/central Canada, west coast Canada housing price is more expensive due mild climate. Good place for retirement. After Hong Kong handover from British to mainland China housing price in Vancouver BC has increased tremendously because so many Hong Kong people moved over there. We can see Richmond BC just like Hong Kong because so many Hong Kong people live overthere. Now booming real estate happened again because of Chinese buyer. West Coast Canada is huge land with only a few population. Vancouver island maybe ten times bigger than Hong Kong island, but Hong Kong population maybe ten times more than Vancouver island. Why Canadian government did not want to open more land for housing. If enough supply, I think real estate price is not super high like this.

Vancouver Island is just catching the eye of the Chinese as 4 years ago in Nanaimo there were very few Chinese. Now it's a different story. I think it might be because of the foreign buyers tax of 15% in the lower mainland ie. Vancouver and just 22 km away in Nanaimo no tax. Makes the market that much more interesting for investors.

It was a good idea with little future thought, we wanted THEIR money, but with little regulation and monitoring - the dollar rules. Those were not new houses on that street they were originally Cdn investment. In behind the "invasion" are hard working Cdn's who benefited greatly and are enjoying the hell out of retirement. Here's a question - When the doors opened and people hiked their prices, to take advantage of massive Chinese money, were grandma and grandpa wrong? I can’t tell, exactly how far up from the ocean are you? Call me paranoid, but I had some opportunities to get some land, homes, even a small farm-along the Northern Pacific coast. The small farm, beautiful land with breath-taking views, was available for an extremely low price considering places my ex and I were looking at a bit farther inland. I did a LOT of research and found several fault lines went right through the farm AND it was in the evacuation zone for a tsunami from Juan DeLa Fuca fault. (Or however you say it 😊). Since then, I’ve kept up with much of the research that’s come up considering the risk that seems to go up with every year that passes without any tension release on the faults out there-including the ones further South than you guys. I think another reason I’ve been so interested is that in all the places I’ve ever visited or lived in my life-the beauty of the Pacific NorthWest is unmatched-in my eyes anyways. The places we looked at and visited, including Vancouver, were my idea of paradise. Some friends moved up there from California a few years ago, they have about 5 acres up on the side of a mountain overlooking the water and they both say that although they’re well aware of the risks, (between fire, quakes, tsunamis and landslides; Bob says his monthly insurance is almost as much as his mortgage!); that it’s worth it to live in such a place in their final years, (they’re in their 70’s, active, but both are dealing with serious health problems). Do you all...or for that matter, your Chinese neighbors spending all the money on these beautiful places; ever think of these things?

There are minimum sizes for apartments, and the number of small units developers can build is strictly limited. As well it's not allowed to partition apartments to shoebox size. All unlike HK. You can buy for a million, of course, but you can also get a 5 bedroom for around US 400 k. And yes, the vast majority of Singaporeans can afford. Water, a roof over the head, food, all this is still relatively affordable in Singapore.

We have to see the end result. There are things happening in MY that should not happen, but overall, looking back over the last 20 years MY has progressed. And that is something you can't say about all countries. I observe the situation from outside, bcs I'm living in your tiny neighbour country, the red dot. I think a couple of plans MY is developing are good, like building a big city neighbouring SGP, or taking part on regional infrastructure improvements. Go forward SGP, MY, and Thailand! BTW. I am German. Private housing is for us Germans not much of a financial speculation subject, but for people to live. If we invest money in private properties other then our own, then we do not expect 7 or 10 % growths pa, or such. It's a great place (Greater Vancouver) to live after you retire with fresh air, great environment. And Van is immigrant friendly place with so many different cultures, plus at the same time, ur property value might go up as well in terms of 5 or 10 years just like what u said in the video . It's a great investment for many families (not just the money). I think that's the main reason why ppl want to buy a house there (Not just the Chinese buyers, but many others as well. Indian, Korean etc...)

Living in BC is wonderful and it’s got the most breathtaking natural beauties I have ever seen in my life. The climate is so comfortable that you don’t even need to buy a winter jacket. Alone the coast it’s just beautiful. I visited a friend’s place in Sunshine Coast, which looks very similar to where he’s shown. You wake up to the ocean view. You can see the Rocky Mountains on one side and see whales in the ocean blowing air on the other side. You can go kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, etc and Vancouver is just a ferry ride away. Seriously. Go visit the beautiful British Columbia.

I know that in some European countries foreigners can buy only an apartment, but not a land or house with land... Land can be sold and bought by citizens only. Myself being chinese Canadian bred and born (37) I see both sides of the equation and the mainland Chinese and even Hong Kong Chinese will do everything and anything to take advantage of our weak economic system and the laws do nothing to curb this. You gotta factor in the Chinese Canadians as well, especially those who immigrated 20 years ago, started buying up properties and kept making money off old money. Like laowai said a typical Chinese family tend to save up a down payment and work without vacation for years to stay afloat financially. Whereas most locals who prefer to go to vacation once every month or few months, the youngsters who live paycheque by paycheque, people who indulge themselves in liquor and weed...in general, most people i know in Van don't save up for a home or retirement up until they are into the 30s or 40s. Also it's ingrained in a Chinese's mind to have a property prior marriage (though it's less and less likely for the younger generation, which means they have to use the parents' money).

Based on the words from a few builders i know, the building material prices are going up, so is the cost to get city inspection during construction. It's getting more and more expensive to build new homes, which also should be factored in increasing housing prices. Meanwhile BC's billions dollar investment on building affordable homes, shadow flipping practice by the estate agents (whose agency had been given too much freedom) are not helping with the situation either. Chinese foreign buyers who consist of approx 4% of home sales (though sales are mostly in the expensive areas) are easier target to pin on for the news outlets and the angry locals, since they wouldn't bother to defend themselves against such claims.
