The story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai has been a household love story in China for more than 1000 years. The heroine Zhu Yingtai, disguised as a man, becomes bosom friends with Liang Shanbo, a classmate of hers for 3 years. Before returning home, Yingtai implies to shanbo that she will be his wife. Knowing that Yingtai is woman, the delighted Shanbo hurries to her home, only to find that her family has betrothed her to someone else against her will. Under the pressure of the patriarchal clan rules and feudal ethics, they die for love and return into a pair of butterflies. The moving tragic legend extols pure love and freedom of love. First appearing in the early Tang Dynasty, the story was put on the stage in the Song and Yuan dynasties, and plays based on the story was widely performed during the Ming and Wing dynasties. The story has been handed down to this day in manifold forms

The name of this piece is: "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", which describes a love story. In ancient China, women were not allowed to go to school for education. And a beautiful girl, her name is Zhu Yingtai. She wanted to go to school very much, so she persuaded her parents to allow her to pretend to be a man. She looked like a boy, and began to go to a distant school to receive education. In school, she met a young classmate named Liang Shanbo. The two were very friendly and became brothers. But the boy didn't know that she was a girl. The study task was over, and each had to return to their hometown. Liang Shanbo sent her home and walked eighteen miles with her home, reluctant to separate. After the separation, the boy’s teacher’s wife told him that Zhu Yingtai was a girl and asked her to be a matchmaker before leaving school so that the two of them could become husband and wife. After Liang Shanbo learned from his teacher's wife that Zhu Yingtai was a girl, he was overjoyed and immediately arranged for a matchmaker to propose to Zhu Yingtai's house. However, Zhu Yingtai has been betrothed by her parents to the child of a wealthy family. That is a bad boy. Zhu Yingtai disagrees very much, but her parents keep her at home and prevent her from going out. She has no choice. Because of this incident, Liang Shanbo returned home and became seriously ill once, and then died. After Zhu Yingtai found out, she was extremely sad and asked her parents to pass by Liang Shanbo's tomb and worship Liang Shanbo on the day she was sent to marry. Her parents agreed to her request. When Zhu Yingtai paid homage to Liang Shanbo, she planned to bump her head on the tombstone. At this time, there was a thunder and lightning in the sky, and it rained heavily. Liang Shanbo’s tomb blasted a hole, and Zhu Yingtai entered In the tomb, the hole is closed. After the rain passed and the sky cleared, their souls became a pair of butterflies flying out of the grave, dancing on the grassland full of flowers, and finally became permanent lovers.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful performance, I want to watch this movie, AGAIN, about the love journey between two young students, she pretended to be a male in order to obtain schooling in ancient China, and he later learned of her identity, but due to circumstances preventing them to be together, ...., at the end, their bodies and souls morphed into butterflies and flew away together....a great love story, I can never get tired of listening to a love story conveyed by the ERHU. Bravo!

No wonder why Chinese aristocrats in the 18th century always refused to adopt western civilization, they thought China already had the superb civilization, and after I've watched (listen) this video clip, I completely agree with them.

lgbtTV5 Actually translation of that name was not really accurate. Historically the name comes from Zhōngyuán which means "central plains". It refers to parts of territories of Qin dynasty China which believed to be origin of Chinese civilization. Actually the term Zhōngguó (as in middle kingdom) was an ancient name that was not used for thousands of years. The modern name of the current Chinese state is Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó (PRC) which is quite long. People get lazy and usually simply shorten it as Zhōngguó. During dynastic time China never refer itself as Zhōngguó it is usually something like "Great Han" (Han Dynasty) or "Great Tang" (Tang Dynasty). You can't blame them for calling themselves great. During that period, it was Chinese hegemony in Asia. 18th century China is actually regarded as Manchurian occupation (Qing Dynasty). Ming Dynasty China was willing to cooperate with Westerners. They even used Portuguese made cannons.

what 'could have provided the Europeans in the 19th century to the Asian cultures ..? know that gunpowder, steel, paper, ink, printing, and some plucked string instruments , also other important disciplines like mathematics, astronomy, chemistry had already developed in Asian cultures, while in the west, still lived in the dark ages.

That's in no way true. The Chinese were never the ones with superior culture. There *is no* superior culture. Here's some great cultures that used to dominate the continents over the years. *Babylon* *Egypt* *Celtic kingdoms* *Hellas* *Rome* *China* These aren't even half. I can go on and on about how great these cultures were. Some still are. I mean, sure the ones I mentioned are no more but parts of their culture still remain. Remnants that changed OUR lives. Seeking the superior culture will make you miserable and sad. Take your time and appreciate all beauty. History is a harsh mistress but holds wonderful secrets.

Lui Ochoa,this is a very popular Chinese string music instrument, called ERHU (close to English, r'hoo) meaning 2-stringed instrument. It has two strings, not one. The tones of them are just like that of violin, or 5 notes difference. The sounds are made by the frictions between the string, one at a time only usually, and the bow which is made of horse tail hair. The sounds from the strings are transmitted to the wooden box, through a sheet of snake skin, within which resonance is created, the sounds.

I enjoy the plaintive sound of the erhu, and especially when it's so well played.Nothing wrong with blending instruments - many cultures used varieties of stringed and wind instruments and percussion, but the erhu is all Chinese. Using "western" instruments allows them to play a wider variety of music, The python skin on the sound box would not be available in most western nations!

@Antonpreis
@Antonpreis 9 жыл бұрын
+DjazairforverOran I called them "western" instruments in inverted commas, as they have been modified for pitch to suit formal western musical requirements. That doesn't take away from the origins, but it does impart a different character to the music, obviously. The way the erhu is played means the bow is permanently engaged with the strings, which limits the sounds available. The flute is western, not bamboo, etc. It's rather a pointless discussion in the 21st century - there's far too much cross-pollination!

China indeed had a wonderful civilization before the influence of western civilization. The most important issue for this civilization was "harmony", which is the central topic in Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The most important issue for western civilization was (and maybe is still today) "conquest" : "conquest" over nature with scientific discoveries, "conquest" of territories and market with colonialism and neo-colonialism, "conquest" of new soul on the religious level, and so on. This "conquest" ideology has brought many benefit to the western world and even to Asia (via the westernization), however, in the long run, this ideology is not sustainable.

China could have taken over the world if they wanted to in the ancient times... they were the first to create gun powder and the first to use it in battle..... remember Admiral Zheng he? his fleet were massive and unmatched, and he'd bring back gifts to the emperor from other countries/civilisations... but they chose not to invade anyone and stayed within the borders of china and eventually the emperor ordered them to be disbanded.... I wish china can find harmony once more again....

lgbtTV5 Gunpowder was invented during Song Dynasty. It was among the reason why the Mongols took it so long to conquer hopelessly weak Southern Song Dynasty. You seems to be unaware of the mohist during warring states period (476-211 BC). The mohist invented several siege weapon, including trebutchet like weapon. Don't forget about bowgun. It already exist in China at that time. Ballista don't even exist until 2nd century BC. If the Romans meet Qin China at that time, it will be a very disadvantageous battle for the Romans given to Chinese superior metallurgy at that period. At that time China don't have a standing navy. They don't even need it. During Zheng He's time, Ming China was very powerful. Having just ousted the Mongols, China was the hegemony in Asia.

lgbtTV5 "while the chinese had good scientific knowledge, they were not engineers and technologists like the greeks"... Wow.... you need to do some research before putting a statement like that... The Chinese were one of the most advanced civilizations in ancient times.. regarding your comment for "not being technologists like the greeks", china had a lot more technology than the Greeks at the time. The Chinese were the ones which invented the blast furnace and cupola furnaces in the Han dynasty, they were one of the most advanced with their skill in metal and they can produce steel weapons and other products and other metal weapons at a vast quantity and in a short period of time.. The chinese are also known for inventing the compass, also invented during the Han dynasty and we also invented the Rudder which was one of the most useful inventions at the time for navigation at sea... China was the first to create the repeating crossbow, and after the song dynasty when gun powder was invented, a whole range of new weapons were invented by china such as the fire lance, land mines and naval mines, hand cannons and exploding cannon balls. We even invented the first flame thrower. A whole load of rocket bombs were used by the chinese. They had also invented paper making at the time and a whole load of other things that would take forever to type up And regarding your statement about engineering, are you fucking kidding me!? have you not seen one of the biggest military engineering in china that helped protect it's northern borders for centuries and centuries??? One of the most iconic symbols of china is the Great wall of china! dude! Fuck i could write a whole essay about all the stuff that china has invented and their engineering but im getting a bit bored... I know that the ancient chinese were not the only ones who were advanced. The greeks i admit were advanced and did have good military engineering, with the inventions of those catapults and ballistas but they would not beat china, well that is my opinion anyway...but even if we do keep on arguing, we will never know the truth because there has never been a battle between a Chinese army and the Greek army... btw, did you know that china was the first to invent alcohol? :)

True traditional Chinese culture focus on respect, harmony and "cycle of Changes". Those who talk about how great the Chinese once was don't know about true Chinese culture. Everything has its up and down. As Chinese said, when things hit the peak, it will go the opposite direction. Yes, China was once a highly developed country, now, it is the USA, in the future, it will be some other countries. That is how nature work as described in the "cycle of changes."

Only when the erhu and the Chinese classical canon are incorporated into western orchestral repertoires do I think the Chinese reverence for western musical heritage shown here will be have been reciprocated. This was beautiful, by the way.

Tap into the earth, earth yourself to the ground. Keep grounded why you learn along the way. Walk with the animals, talk to the animals share what you have to give. Give and they shall receive. The received then shall inlighten you, earth that spark, ignites life in your passion, passionately to your heart. Electrifying, what come through you for the world to see. Fly, spread those wings for I am the wind that carries the butterflies. Lovers of different kinds. Kindness has no shape, kindness no form. Formed by two people falling in love, with butterfly wings.
