One of the reasons why dumplings are eaten during CNY is that the shape of dumplings looks like 元宝, so it also symbolizes good fortune and prosperity.

@@MiriamFollin 元宝, it's an old money once used in ancient China made gold or silver, and it looks like just dumplings and another reason for it is that if you don't eat complains your ears will be frozen off your head. But I think the fundamental reason for what Chinese people eating dumplings for Chinese New Year it is delicious and full of ingredients and with balance diet, not only tastes delicious and easy made, So we Chinese people formulate this Habit to eat dumplings during Spring Festival

Family celebrations are so similar all over the world. Culture to culture; family, food and laughter. Women cooking and kids running around. Men folk doing what men do. This video brought such a big smile,to my face, reminding me of the celebrations I shared with my in laws in North Africa. Learning the language, food and culture is so beneficial to mixed marriages. I miss the warmth and sometimes overwhelming chaotic festivités with them! Having made these blogs, you’ll be so happy to see them years from now! Note to self, video mama making every kind of food, just in case you need a reference someday. I wish I had!

Such a lovely video as always, Miriam. SanSan is losing his baby looks a little already, but he is such a sweetheart. I see SanSans cousin there, and the other couple, are they his cousins parents? I don’t know the family as to whether Yonghang has a sister or a brother? I adore your mother in law. It seems they’re the most unChinese people I have ever come across. Your in-laws giving up meat to suit you and Yonghang, the way your Mum in law seems to have totally taken you under her wing. I always love the videos where you are cooking together. She really seems to treat you like a daughter. I do hope your relationship with your mum in law is as beautiful and honest as it appears on video. As for your handsome hubby (as I always call him), he seems very modern with his quirky haircuts and the fact he treats you so well. I always think he has a very mischievous cheeky face. You are so lucky to have found each other, he ought to be a model. The family don’t look like what people think of as regular Chinese because it’s such a huge country, the looks of the people vary quite a bit. Many people in the west only know the Chinese people who work in the restaurants or food takeaway in their towns and as for the UK, many of those who I know came into our town to start businesses were from Hong Kong. Wishing your Chinese family a wonderful year. Please stay safe and away from Corvid-19. I hope you are safe being in rural parts although I thought it could have been made worse with those people who moved to the cities for work, only to flock back home to their families in the countryside. I dearly hope you are all still safe and healthy xxx Gena
