Can relate to this. I’m not Singaporean but I can speak English and Chinese. Sometimes i feel offended when I strike up the conversation in Chinese and the person reply me in English (with their eye rolled). I can understand that not every Sporean Chinese can speak good Chinese and prefer to speak English, but please at least give me some respects when I’m doing Chinese 😅

And also there is a time when a person finding out I’m doing my undergrad degree in the uk and then be like ‘oh that’s why you can speak good English’. I don’t think it’s a compliment honestly. It’s just a stereotype towards people from other countries.

Learning a language in school will never give you perfect fluency. It’s immersion in a native speaking country that cements learning. And calling Singlish a dialect of English is misleading - it’s a creole made up of so many other important languages.

That's true. I am a Chinese Singaporean and I do have some Chinese Singaporean friends who are bad in Chinese and makes no effort to improve their command of the language. They will give excuses that Chinese is very hard to learn and their Chinese 'just cannot make it'. Needless to say, they also cannot speak their own dialect. I just feel they have lost their cultural heritage and that they are also shooting themselves in the foot when Chinese is going to be a very important language with the rise of China as a global superpower. Together with the irony that I have foreign friends (Caucasians and Koreans) who are learning Chinese and can speak better Chinese than these friends of mine.

Totally. Maybe let's not shame people who can't speak an imposed mother tongue - we've lost our "dialects". And a "bilingual" education is of little use when the second language is only used during that lesson - maybe less than 10% of the week - and everything else is in English. Let's help each other improve :)
@lianxie5582
@lianxie5582 6 ай бұрын
Technically, Singlish is not English - linguists categorise it as a creole involving many other important languages :)
@icedwater

@@lianxie5582 that is true, though I'm sticking with the "basilect of Singaporean English" until we get official Singlish grammars and textbooks :)
@lianxie5582
@lianxie5582 6 ай бұрын
@@icedwater Ok so you see it as a variety holding less prestige. Your point would stand if a language can’t exist without being written down. English spelling wasn’t even standardised until the late 1500s. For thousands of years, languages had sophisticated grammar systems without any textbooks. Creoles always have a main language for vocabulary, and a different one for grammar etc. This unique mix makes them special and distinct. I don’t believe Singlish needs to be a type of English to be important.
@icedwater
@icedwater 6 ай бұрын
@@lianxie5582 sure, but maybe stop inventing points you think I'm making? I agree that Singaporean English and Singlish are distinct entities, even if one can be said to be the lower prestige "variety" of the other. Here are some points I'd like to make: a) we can do better for and with one another by not shitting on our proficiency in imposed languages b) the "bilingual" system as it is helps but is insufficient for doing anything besides promoting English, against which the ground up resistance is still winning - hence the continued need for "Speak Good English" campaigns c) Singlish is already important without being codified, it's just something I have been dreaming of for some time. d) We should make more effort to rediscover our own cultural heritage (Boyan, Hakka, Shanghainese, Peranakan, etc) to properly site ourselves in the evolving Singapore landscape. e) If we don't do (d) then we're at the mercy of whichever cultures dictate our day-to-day language. As a small and young nation, we'll struggle anyway, but let's not get washed out by whichever trend is sweeping the world at the moment.

Who cares? Language is just a medium for conversations. If you can only speak one language then thats fine, no harm. And if you want to learn more than one language and improve on it then thats your choice. Having bilingual education doesnt always guarantee your citizens will be bilingual 100%, there are more factors at play.
