I really like your videos and you seem very knowledgeable of historic Chinese martial arts but you did not really accurately represent what Historic European/ Western Martial arts were like. European swordsmanship was not limited to two handed swords, there was Bastard swords, arming swords, side swords, sabres, rapiers, small swords, foils, epees, etc. Also the way you described fighting with two handed swords was not accurate. You described it as though it was like hitting with a stick or a baseball bat as you see in movies. Longsword fighting was versatile and quick, it was meant for fighting in many situations, armored, unarmored, on the battlefield, or even in street self defense if you were of status to carry such a sword. When unarmored you have to focus on the levering of the sword when striking and have proper edge alignment for your cutting, in longsword you can be defensive and use a repost or try to seek a bind out of someone's attack in order to gain control of someone's blade or even disarm them. When fighting offensively you can rush someone with a flurry of attacks from all angles using both the true edge and the false edge. You are not limited to a simple x motion. Longswords were also usually balanced close to the guard and on average 3 pounds plus they were two handed making them FAST. When armored you do not "bash" with the blade, you grab onto your blade using halfswording technique for more accuracy to thrust through the gaps in the armor or you can use murder strokes to bludgeon your opponent with the guard or pommel. Even Greatsword fighting isn't slow, usually there is sweeping flowing cuts used to keep distance from your enemy and also usually strikes against a foe with a shorter weapon are done as soon as they start their attack when they are open but still out of range to hit you. I hope you keep doing what your doing and possibly a few sparring videos? That would be very intriguing because I love the grace in your movement's and would be very interesting to see their practical aspects. I hope you learned something from this and good luck. P.S. if you want to see some good Western Swordsmanship search up "HEMA The Real Gladiators" they show several different styles of Western fighting with different weapons at full speed and will take out all images of the "Slow Clumsy Knight" from your head.

Very good video about the Chinese Jian. The Jian is comparable to the Western Rapier in how they are used as well as being a weapon of prestige for duelists among the nobles. I was wondering if you could show a video of using the Dao (Broadsword) in actual combat. I like how the Chinese developed different approaches to both weapon types and it is sad that most people think only of Kendo when they think of Asian Weapon Arts. Videos like these are a rare gem to come across.

You asume that your opponent has no armour that protects him from cuts. This assumption might be true in the "civilian" duel situation but on a battlefield it is different. There you need either more heavy blows (e.g. from a dao) or you need to attack parts that have no armour.
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 10 жыл бұрын
That is right, because Chinese swords, the style shown here, is usually for civilian use, not for battle use. In the battlefield, swords are often secondary or backup weapons for the Chinese people back then. They are more into polearms and heavy stuff like war hammer and such in the past.

Chinese Straight Sword is mainly for self-defense at peaceful time, easily pierce through a leather armor. And you can aiming for the throat for the kill or limb joints to disable your opponent. It's as a gentleman's weapon of choice, for self-defense, not a massive killing weapon. In the battlefield, Chinese soldiers use machete, standard personal defense weapon.
@Sinyao
@Sinyao 10 жыл бұрын
The Europeans use halfswording (gripping the blade with their offhand) to more easily stick the tips of their blades into joints and holes in said heavy armor. No matter how hard you swing a sword, it's not going to cleave through plate armor. The style of the jian is similar in that aspect.

Greetings! I have been very interested in Dadaos and the use of them. I have several but I have not been very lucky to find any research materials (books, DVD's, etc.) on how to use them. I've seen lots of info on the straight, double-edged sword and the one-handed ox-tailed type swords but none on the 2-handed Dadaos. Can you please help me? Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Eric Montford Hi Eric. I've been collecting and practicing with the Dadao (as in WWII Style) for the past 4 years. You are correct, there isn't any comprehensive books, instructions on this type of blade. There are a few clips here and there on the internet. I cannot find anyone (real teachers) who really knows how the dadao is really used. I believe since WWII, most of the teachers or practioners of the Dadao that taught it to the Chinese Guojun (national soldiers) have died and whatever teaching is in the form of a chinese manual designed to teach a simplified version to the chinese soldiers during that era. I believe the Dadao is truly a battlefield weapon, kinda like the Moisin Nagant of Russian rifle. It takes a beating and it keeps on beating. I've analyzed that a 4 to 5 pound Dadao is the only sword that can effectively be used against a rifle bayonet attack. It is heavy enough to be able to effectively parry the 10 to 12 pound typical japonese arisaka/bayonet thrust. Having said that, the Dadao movements will not be as fast or as quick as a lighter sword like the the jian or oxtail dao, and will need the practitioner to be stronger and more agile in his footwork movement to position himself while executing simultaneously the parry or block or trap and then the slash. I like to ask Sifu Mok if he could research as present more on the Dadao usage, especially the methods and forms used during WWII against the Japonese. I like to see a renewal renaissance in practicing the Dadao. Would like to hear from anyone out there if they have more information on this. Xie Xie.

in a nutshell , the usage of chinese sword require a high agility of the users , not only on the hand , but also all part of body , must have a fast movement . Chinese sword also not used to attack and defend in one move , but chinese sword is used to attack and defend at a same time , due to its lighter weigh conparing to other weapons . The chinese sword's users also do not almostly depend on the sword , but the combination of their body movement and also the sword's moves ....

Johnson Johnson Almost all armed fighting styles rely on a person's body and weapon, from experience in longsword fighting I can tell you that the most important things in fighting are footwork, body mechanics, timing, and distance.

However there are some misconceptions here, because both Hema and the Japanese (for whatever the reason i forgot the name of the fighting style) but they don't actually go all out, that would be called a overswing in Hema (not so sure about the japanese one because I don't know enough all I know is that they dont go all out so they can go extremely fast) and if you do a committed swing, that one's not actually all out and you can cut your opponent once again with the false edge

I always wondered - why is the character for a Chinese straight sword is used for an Olympic fencing saber?
@remaint3282
@remaint3282 10 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's because the Olympic sabre bares more resemblance to a smallsword than most or even all other fencing sabres(English, German, French, Polish, Indian, Japanese, etc). It seems to me the Chinese generally describe knives(dao) as broad-bladed and single edged in profile. The Olympic sabre possesses no edges and is prolifically very narrow.

Fencing foil resembles the smallsword, not the sabre..
@remaint3282
@remaint3282 10 жыл бұрын
The Olympic Sabre is undeniably narrow in profile, like a smallsword. I don't think the Chinese name-organisers cared which Olympic tool is supposed to symbolise which weapon, because realistically, all the Olympic tools are very narrow in profile.

taichi sword, you should get a firm blade, The 沉 (sinking) feeling of the blade with more weight on the head is better for taichi sword practice, I personally will prefer the jade lion sword from cold steel if I have to do that myself, or some similar sword with a firm skinny blade will do the job. It makes you feel your form is more solid and will also train your wrist strength as you flow on. A flexible and light weight sword is always not good, too floaty and totally don't give you the feeling of where the sword tip is etc

Correct. Not to mention that if your fighting an opponent with plate armor, half-swording is the way to go. It's where you basically grab onto the blade of the sword and use it to club the opponent.

+sinister blade Not nessecarily. He's talking about how people use the Jian in general like a western/japanese style sword. Jian were like rapiers. Not generally used in open combat/battles, but for self defense and duels. You are indeed correct that this would not be very effective with a heavily armored opponent, but jians were rarely used against said heavily armored opponents.

I really like your way to move, it's soft and smooth but we find a lot of swords in Europe, the long swords where used to fight against full plate armors, but if they wanted to be quick it's more probable that they used a rapier that it's longer, lighter and safer for the hand, wrist and forearm, it was designed for combat one to one with out armors, and it's for ignorance say that the techniques of the long swords are just chop like it was an axe, seriously a long sword is a sword not a crowbar or an axe.
@jorper2526
@jorper2526 8 жыл бұрын
If you were fighting someone in full plate with a longsword then you were pretty sad at the end of the day. Swords are ideal vs lightly armored opponents or non armored opponents. That's why knights generally carried warhammers or maces, you could easily inflict damage on a heavily armored opponent (and lightly armored). Not to mention the people in full plate were the knights and nobility who would be on horseback mostly relying on their lance. That being said, not impossible to dispatch an armored opponent with a longsword (via halfswording and using the leverage to injure opponents/put them on the ground to be finished by a dagger, or using a murderstroke to use the longsword like a hammer). The longsword ultimately was a versatile weapon, but was only one of many weapon systems used by Europeans.
