Жыл бұрын

The Henschel 33 was one of the primary medium trucks used by the German Wehrmacht during WW2. Although primarily used by German forces, they would also be exported to other countries such as Spain. During the mid-1930s, a number of them would also be sent to China to serve as the prime movers for their 10.5cm leFH 18 and 15cm sFH18 howitzers. This video will take a closer look at the history of the Chinese Henschel 33s, as well as talk about different Henschel 33 variants that were manufactured specifically for the Chinese military.

Brilliant video, sir. Came across your channel via the Tank encyclopedia video. I really liked how much effort you put it researching the vehicle's use and existence in China. I consider this along with your Mercedes LG2000 video as my favorite.

Bravo Andrew and sterling effort, thanks for putting a colour reference in, that will help a lot of modellers and gamers, its nice of you to add a bit of historical conjecture that will help viewers to understand just how hard it is to get come concrete facts about many elements of China s war of resistance. I had not expected a video from you so soon after the last one, well done.

Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! The reason I was able to finish this video relatively quickly (compared to some of my other videos) was because I had actually done a lot of the research beforehand. I originally planned to do a video on the 15cm howitzers but decided to wait until I can get some footage of the actual surviving ones haha. Information was definitely hard to come by though, especially in English and I had to use a variety of different sources, both in English and Chinese. Definitely a very interesting topic! Hope you found it informative and thanks again for watching!

@a ju I’m not sure if the crew in that particular photo are actually Asian haha. But yeah, there were a few notable Asians who served in the Wehrmacht. Chiang Kaishek’s son Chiang Weikuo actually served in a Panzer unit in the late 1930s before returning to China.

God knows the kmt motor pool would have been hell. With Germany fighting for the axis and the kmt for the allies, one has to wonder were they got the spare parts. Maybe the allies supplied parts form Captured German stocks
@resistanceremembered
@resistanceremembered Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the KMT used all sorts of vehicles that they could get. For the Henschels at least, it seems that with the end of the Sino German cooperation, they weren’t able to get any spare parts. An American officer who examined some of them in 1943 reported that they were in need of overhauling but were still usable. The lack of fuel seemed to be a larger issue for some of the artillery regiments with the Henschels. I think there were plans to provide the Chinese 15cm howitzers with German ammunition captured by the Allies but there are reports that suggest the ammunition wasn’t able to reach China in time before the end of the war. As for providing spare parts, it could have happened but it probably would have been easier to provide them with newer trucks instead.

@@resistanceremembered fair enough, though it would still have been a more rapid solution to the problem of truck shortages and help find a use for all the captured kit the allies had in storage yards.

Great stuff...as always we'll researched and presented, first class 🙂. I wonder how long after the war they were still used , even in a civilian capacity?. Cheers 🙂🙃🙂
@resistanceremembered

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! In my opinion, the surviving vehicles may have been used for a few years but probably not for very long. I don’t think they would have been surpluses out to the civilian market due to the fact that the Chinese civil war occurred not long after the end of WW2. They would most likely have been used until the end of their service life. Those that may have survived were probably scrapped not long after the end of the civil war as they would have been obsolete and the government was in serious need of metal. This will probably explain the lack of surviving German vehicles and equipment in China today. The weapons though are a different story since even though they were obsolete, they could still be used by troops if needed so were probably placed in long term storage. As a result, I know of at 3 surviving German 15cm howitzers and at least one 10.5cm howitzer in China today. Thanks again for watching!

Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The Germans definitely sold many different types of weapons and equipment to the Chinese, although for the most part, in small numbers. If the Sino German cooperation had continued for a few more years, the Chinese likely would have had a much easier time fighting against the Japanese. Thanks again for watching!

@resistanceremembered Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! As I mentioned in the video, some vehicles were definitely painted into the pre-war German 3-tone camouflage pattern. Whether or not they had the later two-tone pattern is hard to tell due to the lack of coloured photographs.
