I took Mandarin almost 50 yrs ago @ the Defense Language Institute, and even though I had picked up Vietnamese and German, this was my first formal language training. My primary instructor, a Dr. Wu, used to pull his hair out with my pronunciations. I'm originally from Appalachia and everything I said had a "country" sound to it. Emphasizing the tones were the hardest part for me. He warned me that I would someday call someone's mother a horse. (Ma)
