Today I went to Northwich in Cheshire to photograph the lovely bridges over the river Weaver. I had my Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 522/24 loaded with Ilford FP4. The weather was sunny and all seemed well. 5 frames in, and the winder knob seized up. Very frustrating, but nothing I could do at the time. Somewhat despondent, I returned to the main pedestrian area, idly wandering into a charity shop and .... there was a very clean Chinon CP-7M with it's case. A quick detour to Poundland secured some AAA batteries, and returning to the shop I loaded said batteries, and everything sprang into life. Even the dreaded foam seal looked and felt like new, and anyhow when the camera is in it's case, this window is covered. Max Spielmann provided a roll of XP2, ( although the assistant had to rummage under the counter to find it ) and I was back in business. My particular example has an Auto Chinon Zoom MC Macro, 35-70mm, a very similar spec to the one featured. I've already got a couple of Auto Chinon lenses and have found them to be far from shabby performers. Hopefully this will continue the trend. The built in macro is impressive from what was a budget manufacturer. The camera is indeed an easy one to use, with good ergonomics. It didn't take long to familiarise myself with it. I do like these late model cameras, they're well made and have the benefit of decades of development behind them. I prefer these to the subsequent autofocus cameras which are usually slow, noisy and not necessarily that accurate. Moral of this tale? Take two cameras and spare film, then you won't be 'forced' to 'have to buy' yet another camera.🙂 😇

A very well done description of the camera and its functions. I was interested because I was gifted one a few years back and didn't try it out until recently. I found that the seals were rotted and the shutter was frozen. As I have a couple of other K-Mount cameras I scrapped the body and keep the Auto Chinon MC Macro 35-70mm f3.5-4.5, which I have subsequently found to be a decent performer.

I found one of these at the last local flea market of the year back in October and got it for 30 Euros as the seller really wanted to ged rid of it before the winter. It came with the standard Exakta zoom of that time period, a flash and even an adapter for M42 lenses. I was quite astonished by the pictures it takes, even with the questionable Exakta lens, but it really shines when you put e.g. the Chinon 50mm f/1.9 on it which was probably the kit lens for this camera (and that I got for next to nothing on ebay). I was mainly attracted to this one by its distinctive '80s design but found it to be quite a good camera, much like you said. The P-M-A-B and up/down buttons are a bit tricky to get used to, though, I prefer selection wheels. ;-)

Nice overview and photos! So, is it correct that this camera takes any lens (native or m42 with adapter) and is able to use it in any mode? Never heard of it, if so, a very usefull feature indeed!

I used to go youth Hostelling with the Nottingham YHA group around 1980, there was a guy called Graham that was a photography enthusiast, he had one or more Chinon cameras from Dixons, pretty sure he did his own processing too. Fomapan, I keep coming across that brand, must give it a go after seeing your results

I've got a chinon cm4 with a 50mm 1.9 a very basic no frills slr. Mechanical shutter and a simple traffic light metering system. I think personally a better buy than the overpriced k1000 and I've owned both.
