The Shithooks are they were called. They can lift a tremendous amount. Their counter rotating blades allow them to operate in the high altitudes of Afghanistan to support Special Forces high in the mountains where regular choppers can't reach. They are fast, maybe not the fastest but still one of thr fastest. I've seen them hover right on thr water, drop their rear tail gates and a Special operations rubber raft would motor right in, close the rear door and take off. Just amazing. I've been fortunate enough to ride in one during army officers training. Not bad for a 60 year old helo.

While fighting wild fires in 1997 there was a huge pond about a 3/4 a acre. 60 ft deep near Hells Canyon Idaho. There was a Chinook that would drop a 500 gallon bucket 75ft below the trees and pull water out of the pond and dump water near us while we were doing fire lines. One evening while we were hiking back to the trucks to leave, my fire crew and I were lucky enough to go by the pond as the Chinook was coming in to grab water. Even though he was about 90ft or so above us the rotor wash was sucking the air away from us so after a couple minutes we started leaving cause it was getting hard to breath. Holly cow that thing was huge. After 3 days that 60 ft pond was only about 6 ft deep when we left. Its amazing how they can maneuver that huge chopper so quickly even at low altitude.

My son was a CH-47 Mechanic deployed to KAF Afghanistan and served when needed on their Downed Aircraft Recovery Team (DART). Among other things, he was the guy who would be underneath the helicopter connecting the slingloads. Man, you really have to trust the pilot while doing that! But his pilot was a CWO4 who trained the trainers at Ft. Rucker, so the best and most experienced possible. Later, when my son was in crew chief training for 160th SOAR and they were training for slingloading, they actually had him do that training module since he was even more experienced than the trainers were at doing this, which is saying something. But the rotor wash underneath these aircraft is extraordinary. In Afghanistan, with the rocky, sandy soil there, he would get tears in his clothes from the rocks that would fly at him because of the rotor wash sometimes. I have a story he told me about them purposely using their rotor wash to literally blow over a Toyota Hilux and 2 insurgents planting rockets in a dry riverbed one day when they were doing a test flight and weren’t armed. The 47 weighs about 25,000 lbs. and can lift an additional 25,000, so that’s well over 50,000 lbs. of thrust available for it to be able to fly. In the hands of a skilled pilot, some incredible things can be done.

I was sitting between the two pilots plugged in as we hit a fog bank very near Nui Ba Den....the Black Virgin Mountain in 1970. We had a load of 30 55 gallon drums of CS, each with a C 4 charge on it, in the back. One pilot had to wear a gas mask until we dumped. The other pilot flying the craft broke into a profuse sweat as I think he was experiencing vertigo. Dicey couple of minutes until we regained visibility. Eventually discharged the CS, got a secondary explosion out of it that intrigued the FAC. All in a 1st Cavalry day’s work.

I could probably have flown a Cessna at 6 years-old with nothing more than some rudder pedal extensions... and the "big guy" in the other seat keeping me straight. But Chinook pilots must have four balls. A friend from school days ended up flying them; we used to race around on street bikes as young as 14 , and he was still a small guy then (so was I, and I still am). He had a Yamaha RD250, and I had a Honda CB360T... pretty evenly matched. Not sure if he ever grew up : )
