It’s super back tracked. Back tracking is only supposed to cover 10-20% of vocals. Not 50% or more lol.

The fact that he pulls the mic away on the louder and higher notes but the volume of his voice doesn't change one single bit shows how horribly lip synced this is. I would say that I don't understand why he'd decide to go through with this if he can't do it anymore, but it's Craig, so I definitely understand.

It's strange because I literally saw him perform these songs acoustic at a coffee shop a year ago and he sang them almost perfectly with his actual voice. I think he has a ducking effect so that whenever his voice comes in, the backtrack goes out lower in volume to make room for his real voice but it along with other layers and harmonies are definitely there. Its kinda like what I see a lot of hip hop artists do during their live shows. He could have totally left that main vocal track layer out and it absolutely would have still sounded great.

Pulling the mic away is to help the sound guys and it helps the vocals sound more fluid and natural so the louder/higher parts don’t over saturate the mix, and makes the sound guys job a lot easier plus helps his vocal range, it’s a common action a lot of well versed vocalist use to help the outer mix we all hear during the performance. Believe it or not singing is higher in decibel and volume than screaming, hence why most “screamers” hold the mic closer to their mouth. Craig is an amazing vocalist all around, been doing it for over 20 years at this point, And he is genuinely sounding this good, Don’t let the backing harmonies fool you, is there backing?… yes but it’s just to “back” up his vocal performance that’s how he’s getting them layers, and a genuinely amazing performance… it is possible for a vocalist to sound amazing live, difficult to tell in this day and age. So I get your quarrel with this performance. But as a previous commenter had said he did an acoustic show and sounded just as good! No effects, backing or layers, just raw talent!

@@InFamous_Asylum6 I agree. Craig doesn't need to "cheat" and he knows it. I even hear some mild autotune settings on his voice. Unless those are the tuned layers that I'm hearing but I can still tell when he's singing versus the layers. It personally doesn't bother me. I think they went a little overboard with it and could have dialed it back a bit but I had so much fun watching them play, I didn't even care lol. And as far as the bringing the mic away from his mouth, you're right. It is difficult to get a lot of compression on a live mic without feedback and so if he was to hold the mic close while projecting, it would spike the levels a lot and be so much louder than the quieter parts of the phrase he's singing and so he kind of has to do that to prevent it from sounding bad. But also, you can have a super compressed layer along with the main vocal to make up for the less compressed main vocal that is live being sang in real time. Also, if he is using auto tune... there is this misconception that autotune magically fixes your performance. It doesn't. If anything, it's harder to sing with because it's so unforgiving. If you are too flat or too sharp, the software will try to correct your voice to the nearest wrong note and so you literally have to sing perfectly or else it will be very obvious that you suck at singing. Craig has been singing these songs for so long. They're built into his muscle memory. He's a very good singer and it feels natural when you're a good singer. I am also a vocalist and can sing similarly to Craig and have been a musician for a very long time and when you just have the right vocal cord anatomy for it, it doesn't take much effort to sing like that. And yes, like I said before, I recently saw Craig at a very small venue with like 30 people in the audience and watched him sing. He can sing these songs just fine. I don't think in his mind he thought for one second, "I really need to cheat right now or else people are going to see that I can't sing" because he knows he can. I doubt the thought ever even crossed his mind. You also have to keep in mind that he has a whole crew of people that the record label hired for this festival to help build the live rig they're playing with. That organized all the backtracks, the guitar tones, the gear, and made it all function a certain way and he just showed up and rehearsed for it.
