Microchips are the new oil -- the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Until recently, the United States was the #1 superpower, but its edge is slipping due to competition from Taiwan, Korea, Europe, and, above all, China. In "Chip War" economic historian Chris Miller explains how America’s advantage in the chip market led to economic and military superiority, and what it could mean if China catches up.
In this virtual book talk, Miller and "Doorstep" co-hosts Tatiana Serafin and Nikolas Gvosdev discuss the current state of politics, economics, and technology, and the vital role played by chips.

Predicting cutting edge chips will improve exponentially, over time, seems very reasonable. However, does delivery of future chip tech mean future FABs must exponentially retool 300 production steps? Certainly, the mask must be redesigned, but maybe not the wafer transport systems. Using the 80/20 rule only 20% or est. 60 current FAB steps might need to undergo radical redesigned. Predicting the cost to FAB the next chip leap, perhaps should include predicting which FAB steps must bb radically redesigned. Like the mask, HVAC is one critical tech Semiconductor FABs will need to improve, as FAB locations are increasing hot.
