Like many hand tool woodworkers, I've got a mild obsession with vintage woodworking tools. They're incredibly important in our craft and frankly, they're just as good if not better than a lot of modern day tools. Fun fact: most antique or vintage chisels, and vintage tools in general, are made with harder, better quality steel than what's available at the big box store today. Because of that, tool restoration is more important now than ever in my opinion. In this video, we'll go over how to restore rusty chisel and chisel restoration by beginning with tool restoration rust removal, sharpening a chisel on a waterstone, sharpening a chisel with a honing guide, how to make a chisel handle, how to refinish a chisel handle, and ultimately how to refinish a chisel. This video is more than just how to restore a chisel or how to fix a chisel, but goes step by step in making a timber framing slick, a prize in vintage woodworking hand tools. At the end of the day, with just a few simple tools, time, and determination, vintage chisel restoration becomes easy and rusty chisel restoration will become second nature. Restoring a chisel is fun, and attaches to your future work beautiful stories that will last as long as what you make with it.

Thanks man. Yeah I noticed over time my holdfast covers had some issues staying on because the leather breaks in and compressed over time... so I was worried I’d have a similar thing here eventually. So the magnets were a good way to make sure I’m not flinging it all around the joint!

Outstanding video! Came here from r/Leatherworking and really appreciate the quality of this video. Very well polished. Welcome to leatherwork, I think you'll enjoy it. But be forewarned it has its own rabbit holes. You may be finding yourself chasing down the perfect round knife. Or looking through template archives. It is a blast tho. And we'll done on the leatherwork shown in the video. You're fortunate that you already have a steady hand due to your other persuits.

@@thijspluis9998 I don’t necessarily disagree with you but I am of the opinion that strong safety practice as opposed to safety equipment eliminates most of that margin for error. That turned out really slick!! If you change you mind and want to make more handles using hand tools you should make a Spar Gauge. It marks out the lines for an octagon and it even works on tapered stock. (shameless self promotion time: I made a video about how to make a simple version here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYvcfJeprN16h9k)
@CowDogCraftWorks

SHAMELESS. But yeah I’m probably not gonna be making octagons anymore. Unless I make the world’s largest and thiccest pair of chopsticks.
@TheGrantAlexander
@TheGrantAlexander 3 жыл бұрын
@@CowDogCraftWorks that would be a fun project! The thing about making it an octagon is that this is the intermediate step. After that it is very easy to turn the work piece into a round shape. But it's probably even easier to do that on a lathe 🤣🤣 (but I don't own a lathe 😓)
