A Piazzolla: Nightclub 1960 from Histoire du Tango | Chloe Chua (violin) & Kevin Loh (guitar)

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Brazilian dance rhythm bossa nova was incorporated into Argentinian tango and these new tangos were being performed at nightclubs in Buenos Aires. Audiences rushed to the nightclubs to listen earnestly to this new sound of tango. In
Nightclub 1960, Piazzolla combined both the flashy, syncopated rhythmic elements and the melancholic expressive character from the previous two movements, Bordel and Café. He also added in additional percussive effects. Hope that you like our interpretation of this beautifully written piece. in the musical fields of older music, like classical music or neo tango (which piazolla defined with his compositions) we are talking about "interpretation". A cover falls more into the field of popular music, modern metal or other newer music. The difference between a cover and an interpretation is in parts, that some of the older music has no recordings (like, bethoven didn't even lived during a time, where you can record), so musicians rely completely on music sheets to reinterpreting the pieces. You can argue, that piazolla has lived in times, where his music has been actually recorded, so I am not competely telling you are wrong in calling this a "cover". My argument is, that piazolla himself interpreted his piece each time differently, with each performance. And also there is a great chance, that a classical interpreter like cloe and kevin are also relying a lot more on the sheet music and their own interpretation (maybe with the help of instructors / teachers) than on the existing records, which are also different interpretations and/or based on different interpretations. I probably sound like a smart ass :-D and I am sorry for that.

This isn't a "piece" in the classical sense, this a tango, and tango has to have a particular driving beat. So the other arrangements are far more danceable than this.

I'm 45, started to play the violin around 8, have listened to many, many violinists. Never in my life have i ever heard anyone play like you. You're literally the best I've ever heard. I used to play the violin when I was 5 years old and I quit at the age of ten and I never had any interest in classical music since. As of today, I am 22 years old and coming across your video moved me in such a way that I am going to start playing the violin again. I'll never become as good as you, but my dream is to one day be able to move people with my playing, the way you did to me. P.s. seeing you play in real life is for sure on my bucket list.

As a musician, honestly the best violin I heard is from Cloe. Infinite depth to her talent. That is what sets her apart. The depth to her playing. It at most only comes around once a century for a particular instrument. I usually get bored listening to violin quick, not all with Cloe. Point in case, I personally dont like Vivaldi 4 Seasons. Well, I listened to her performance of 4-seasons during an international competition over and over again. It is the depth to her playing. If I can be won over with 4 seasons then there is absolute depth and talent. Unquestionable.

personally i prefer more harshness, more like true sound from live performance. i guess the recording technicans remove a little bit of the string scratchy sound , leads to less articulation and the attack of the beginning of each notes, which i think chloe dont need that much of that, because chloe has great articulation originally and beautiful tone in live performance.

Chloe's playing so expressive, rich in tone and the musicality is immaculate !!! Kevin's such a good accompanist/guitarist, and I love how in every piece they both are dressed differently suited to the piece. Chloe's dress is very stylish and extravagant !! Прекрасно, но всё же вряд ли по-взрослому, немного динамики не хватает. This is the 102nd comment. I am adding it because the number "101" gives me the shivers. (1984 and all that.) To keep the comment relevant, for reasons given in the description, this is the piece in the cycle that best exemplifies the extraordinary range of Chloe's mercurial talents. The one thing I would add is that "melancholic" undersells the emotional depth that Chloe plumbs in the exquisite (repeated) slow passage. In this passage, the mood is one of desolation. As I said in a comment on the original audio-only post of the complete Histoire, Callas at her peak could not have sung it more expressively.

*Editorial: All my "essays" were composed before the live videos. I claim the right to additional remarks :) I think, this is my favourite movement. This is a Tour de Force of Virtosity. While sharing the same structure of fast and slow parts with the other movements this one really blows the mind. The real virtuosity is of the composing virtuosity not the technical provess of the performer. Some will not agree with me but I prefer this kind of genuine storm of originality to any virtuose composers which I find kind of patterned, with not much suprises. Those slowing downs traversing from fire to singing like angels. No words to describe it..., just listen
