At 7:26 that cabinet used to be a swamp cooled refrigerator. A tank of water sat on the top that dripped water into the troughs of the four sides and the mesh screen on the four sides which were usually covered with burlap allowed the water to seep down to the bottom and into a collection tub. The wet screen acted like a swamp cooler. This is how they kept the nitro glycerine cooled. They also would put food and milk in there to keep it somewhat cool. It was someone's job to transfer the waste water from the bottom tub to the top tank every so often and they would also replenish the water that evaporated off.

@@PinInTheAtlas You will see them in different shapes when you get to see one at all. They are a very rare find these days. Most were built with a taper in the shape of a windmill tower. The water traveled to the bottom slower that way and kept things even cooler inside.

Nice explore, good pictures. Are those small cabins the only buildings still standing in Chloride? If so, how sad. I was there in the early 1970's and there was a cluster of wood buildings, larger ones like stores, in the townsite. The thing lying in its side with the mesh might have been a cooler. A material such as burlap hung down the sides and kept wet. Evaporation cooled the food inside. Water to keep the material wet was in a container on top.
@PinInTheAtlas3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan. Yes, what you see is all that we could find. I guess vandals, the park service and weather have contributed to the loss of the other buildings. Nothing lasts forever!
