Can these be installed in-ceiling without any enclosure? if so, does it require any frame?

well you can make standard aluminium stiff by heating it up in the oven tell it's dark red and then dumping it in oil. you'll be better to stamp a creas channel in the uprights better stiffness and lower resonance
