George Washington's Mount Vernon

George Washington's Mount Vernon

Күн бұрын

Have you ever wondered where chocolate comes from, or how it became so common in our society? Did you know that George and Martha Washington also consumed chocolate?
The chocolate we eat today is pretty different from what the Washingtons enjoyed. For one thing, it was not possible to walk into a store and just buy a candy bar. Sometimes George Washington had to wait weeks to receive his chocolate orders. It also tasted very different: chocolate in Washington's time contained no milk or sugar.
And while there are many differences in how we eat chocolate today, the way we make chocolate has not really changed!

The tea cups in the 18th century did not have handles and they actually mixed the liquid, usually tea, in the cup then poured it into the saucers, which were more like small bowls, and drank from that!

Washington should have grown cocoa beans at Mt. Vernon and made his own chocolate, he could have had another cash crop.

Chocolate is grown and produce in. Africa, etc, during George Washington times and slavery, it was our people that picked and did the labor. George Washington was just like any other slave owner, didnt give a damn about owning human beings, when two to three or more slaves ran away frim his estate, he put out ads and track them down.
@Cynnas
@Cynnas 4 жыл бұрын
Chocolate from Africa? LOL. And your rant about Washington owning slaves is utterly ridiculous. This video is about chocolate not the horrors of slave ownership. Stop that nonsense, it's OK to talk about different aspects of history especially when they address his slave ownership elsewhere.

Chocolate comes from America, not Africa. Chocolate wasn't known before America was found. And besides, George Washington changed his views about slavery in his old days. It was challenging to him because of his family background and his dependence on slaves, it was still a progress.
