Technically the rings you see are insulators. They don't connect to anything. But your are right for the most part. (also 3 or 4 rings don't do anything for durability)

Two rings mean 3 contacts: ground, left, right. Three rings - 4 contacts: ground, left, right, mic. And you are not supposed to put stereo jack to garniture socket. It actually can lead to troubles, especially due to that fact, that contacts are aligned differently.
