I guarantee you if real soldiers had to row a damn boat they would not be doing this stupid crap. You sit backwards when you row so you can use your whole body to pull. If you tried pushing like this it would not work worth a damn. That’s why it isn’t a thing. Because physics is a thing. You turn your head to see where you’re going. You pull on the oars because you’re braced in place and can actually do something. Trying to push the oars away from you means you are braced against nothing and you couldn’t put anywhere near as much energy into it.

@ClaytonMacleod I own a row boat and use it to fish, you certainly can row in the direction you are facing. It's only slightly less easy. It's certainly not impossible What do you mean you are not braced against anything? You don't really brace yourself in the normal position. It's easier to get a longer pull but it's just the reverse stroke really.

🤦‍♂️ Next time you go out in it, try rowing in the normal fashion as fast as you can *with your feet lifted up* and see whether or not your feet were involved in the process. Olympic racing boats have the mechanisms in them that they do for a reason. You aren’t using nothing but your arms. You are using your arms, your back, your legs, and your feet are the anchor that allows you to impart all that energy on the oars. I didn’t say you would literally not be able to go anywhere at all. I didn’t say it was impossible to do. I said it was bloody stupid, which it is. Nobody would do that with the intention of actually getting anywhere quickly and efficiently because it is neither quick nor efficient. You can’t generate anywhere near as much power doing that, and the reason is because the harder you push on the oars the closer you get to pushing yourself over backwards. But when you are pulling you are using your feet and legs to keep yourself upright, as well as use those muscles to help pull if you’re really going for it. Yes, you can achieve locomotion if you push. But it will be neither fast nor practical. You’d likely do so when performing slow speed maneuvering, but you’d never going to do it in order to try getting somewhere fast. It doesn’t work. You would need an upright back chair mounted rigidly in there to push against to make it even approach half-ass territory. And I’ve never seen a row boat with such a thing installed. And it would still be a massive disadvantage compared to proper rowing where you can use your whole body to pull.

@@ClaytonMacleod Right? I didn't say it was the most effective stroke. I said I wouldn't want to row backwards into combat. I've been rowing for 50 years, my son rows competitively. I don't have to try it next time I go out. Your right that you can plant your feet but it's not as significant as you think in a row boat without a fixed footplate. You still have to balance so you don't tip backwards at the end of the stroke. It's really just reversed, the average person can pull more than they can push and that's the reason it's the normal stroke.
