It is not known when Chojnice received city rights, as no mention of it has survived. The oldest indirect information about Chojnice is contained in a document issued by Mestwin II in 1275 to Augustinians from the nearby village of Swornegacie. The test mentions Mislibous Malowy de Choyniz, considered to be the first known resident of the city by name.
There was a stronghold here before, with an eminently defensive location on the isthmus between the now defunct Jeleńcz and Zielone lakes. In 1309 the city came under the rule of the Teutonic Knights, who during the first half of the 14th century strengthened Chojnice, enlarged the area belonging to the city and finally issued a new location document in 1360.
Thanks to its location on the main route connecting the Order with Brandenburg, Chojnice developed very quickly, gaining wealth mainly through trade. Within 20 years (1340-1360), the parish church was erected and the construction of the fortifications was completed. They also made Chojnice an important link in the defense system of the south-west border of the Teutonic state.
That is why the city was called the Key and Gate of Pomerania by Jan Długosz. The period of prosperity ended with the outbreak of the Polish-Teutonic war in 1409. After the victory at Grunwald, Polish troops also entered the city for a short time.
Chojnice is situated in a picturesque area, among lakes, rivers and forest backwoods. The forests surrounding the city are among the largest and most beautiful in Poland. Kashubians living in these areas still cultivate the traditions and customs of their ancestors. Unpolluted nature allows tourists to relax in a perfect microclimate.
The abundance of lakes, rivers, bicycle and hiking trails allows you to spend your holidays actively. There are several dozen lakes of various sizes in the area surrounding the city and the commune, among which the most famous is Lake Charzykowskie - the cradle of Polish sailing.
