There is a bead challenge going from LadybirD Loves , incorporating beads into wearables. I have a shoebox full of beads . Doesn't sound like much but it is a LOT of beads . I have made jewelry and embellished all manner of crafty stuffs over the years . Most were from thrift stores and garage sales . While inexpensive , not having a label with size has been frustrating. Having a bead rasp has helped with inconsistent hole sizes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and tips .

Hi Denise. Thank you so much for your comment. I have never heard of a bead rasp before so thank you for sharing that with me and now I have to go look at that. 😆 Thanks for sharing LIsa and Ingrid's beady challenge. I did a video the other day about it and have been getting questions about beads so that is what prompted this video so that I can maybe answers some questions all at once. I totally get that a shoebox of beads, it is a lot of beads. They are small and it's a small fortune in that box as they add up quickly. Sounds like you have lots of experience with beads and I will pin your comment in case other might have questions for you. Thank you so much!

I bought cheap necklaces and things from the thrift store and other beads, had a problem figuring out what size bead cap to use-didn’t have a pattern-saw a professional jewelry maker on utube who strongly suggested having a caliper tool for various uses during the jewelry making process! I plan to buy one. I wonder if it might help u in determining the sizes of ur beads! I’m very new to this, so, just a thought!!!

@KnittingTurnPike
@KnittingTurnPike 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Wendy, yes, you can do it that way for sure, but I like this way as you don't have to try to put hundreds of beads on your yarn. Some of the shawls I make have over 1400 beads. The idea of prestringing all those beads give me the shakes. I don't think I would do it if I had to do that. I always say there is more than one way to do most anything in knitting. And I know of two other ways to add beads without pre-stringing but they are not that easy. Thank you so much for watching and your comment. I hope you are having a lovely weekend!! 🤗💕🌼🌻

Hi Teresa, yes, that is the word I was looking for!! Thank you! I probably would have messed that up anyway as I read it, I am stumbling over Swarovski...haha. Beads are not for every project. Sometimes you want a shawl that you can wrap around you easily and it just be soft without beads in it. I understand that. And I bet the beads you add to your doilies make them so special. I love that idea and for tablecloths. I bet those are heirloom pieces! Thanks for sharing that with us!! Happy Long Weekend!!! 💕🤗

I have yet to use beads in a project but maybe one day.....my 2 nieces do lots of beaded native jewelry so we went at Christmas time to a bead store in ottawa (quite handy that it’s right beside the yarn store lol) but boy oh boy that bead store.....I had no idea where to start but a wee little bag cost us $100 and we bought only beads on they were #11 so no clue what that means but it’s what the girls told me to get, oh 2.2mm I guess your chart says lol, so is that the total size or the hole size? it just popped up. Great information my friend! I’ll definitely refer folks to this in my next podcast because it is greatl’y informative

Hey my sweet friend. You are so kind. I am so glad you like the information. Beads can be quite expensive and it's like really what is this made of...gold??? Yes, the bead size the relative to the hole size and you need to know that to correspond to the yarn you are using. That really is all there is. It seems complicated because you have the names that don't go with the mm sizes but it's not. Thank you so much for your kind words and watching this. @KnittingTurnPike
@KnittingTurnPike 10 күн бұрын
Hi Rhonda, so glad it was helpful. I use the small steel crochet hooks usually size 11-14. The larger the number on those, the smaller the hook. And yes I did a video on how to add using a crochet hook a while back (long time ago) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f52si4FsrMZjmqM but you can also use dental floss threader or floss (unwaxed). I think the crochet hook is the easiest method by far. Or you can also prestring them (UGH).

Hi, I'm sorry for the late reply, just getting back to YT after some time away. I did a search in Ravelry for free knit shawls with beads and this is the result: www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#sort=best&inline=&query=free%20knit%20shawl%20with%20beads Maybe one of these would work?? And in regard to your other comment, I have used crochet hooks size 11 and smaller (larger numbers) and yes it depends on the hole size of the bead. Most recommend a size 14 but I like to try an 11 because the hook on the 14 is so small and has a tendency to split my yarn sometimes. I hope that helps.
