Learn how to choose between panther chameleon locales and evaluate panther chameleon breeders. I have been a breeder myself and so I know what to look for in a chameleon and I can show you how to evaluate breeders so you make the best choice. Whether you are looking for a single pet or to start a breeding project, this video will get you started on the right foot.
This video is Chapter one in A Story of Panther Chameleons which follows the journey of an experienced chameleon enthusiast as he puts together a small panther chameleon breeding project. You can watch every step of the way as the locale is chosen, cages are set up, juveniles are raised, breeding is initiated, and babies are eventually found new homes. This is a two year project and I invite you to come along with me as I share each step and help you avoid pitfalls in your own Panther Chameleon experience.
I have just launched a Chameleon Academy line of enclosures specifically for giving your chameleon the best home! Check them out here:

And if you are gathering equipment for your chameleon, I have an affiliate link for The Bio Dude where you can get 10% off of almost everything on the website (excluding some cages). Use the coupon code CHAMELEON10 on checkout at www.thebiodude.com/

My girls have always surprised me with new colors throughout their lifetimes. My girl right now is a Nosy Be. Usually she is brown but when she is completely relaxed she is peach colored with blue shining through her skin, she has green cheeks, a bright green spine and yellow and red dots on her stomach. Absolutely beautiful. When she is afraid she will turn bright orange with the blackest stripes known on earth. I call her my little tiger. People are too focused on the males in my opinion. The girls really rock the color changing game. To be fair her uncle, also a Nosy Be, was a handsome guy. He started out as bright green and some blue and the older he got the more red he became. Very fascinating.

I don't know why i'm watchting this, as i'm miles away from being in a position to have such a pet. But the way you talked about the females warms my heart. People often tend to treat aesthetically pleasing animals (and also people) better, so when i realized that the females are duller, i worried they'd be less popular, simply because they don't looks as pretty/striking. I came to panther chamelions due to the amazing colors of the (flared up) males, but i think if i were to get one, i'd take a female. Their colors look like something i'd imagine on dinosaurs and they're stunning in their own right.

@@ChameleonAcademy 10 years ago I owned a veiled chameleon for about 5 years enjoying every moment with him.Unfortunately I had to give him away to a friend because I decided to go with sugar gliders. Owning sugar gliders was a terrible mistake on my part realizing I would rather much prefer reptiles like chameleons instead. I quickly returned the sugar gliders back to the owner leaving myself without a pet for the next 6 years. I’ve took into consideration about owning a panther chameleon my entire life, till I decided now is the time more than ever! I have 5 years of experience with owning a chameleon so I’m very familiar with all the care and equipment that comes along with proper ownership. I do have one question if you mind me asking? In the past I would dust my crickets with vitamin d3 to help with calcium, though they’re mixed reviews on using supplements without d3 due to hypervitaminosis?

What panther are you interested in? I am comparing genetics and trying to find unrelated individuals. It is a little bit more complicated for me because I am looking for breeding pairs. Love the content. Most of my questions have been answered by watching your very detailed videos! I do have a question I'd like to get your opinion on. I want to do a bio-active setup with your 2x2x4 hybrid cage. However, I'm worried about airflow with the natural chimney effect your cage provides. The substrate will block most if not all of the screen mesh at the bottom of the cage. What would you do in my shoes to provide the chimney effect still? If I drill some large holes in the pvc sides and/or the acrylic door and cover them with mesh, would that work? Again appreciate everything you've done for this committee. Can't wait to get my first one!
@ChameleonAcademy
@ChameleonAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
If you block the front air intake then, yes, you can make screen covered holes in the sides panels for the air flow. I would suggest getting it all set up long before hand so you can make sure you have the right number of perfectly sized holes. Also know that you can always add a little computer fan to aid in airflow. Let me know how it goes!

hi, I've been wondering if female chameleons don't need a bit more attention than males... I've been reading about them for almost a year now cuz Im really interested in getting one. one thing I read is that they need a lot more substrate at the bottom of the cage for laying eggs and that it can be very problematic if they don't have this opportunity. would you say, that that's important? cuz I'm very interested in getting a female but I'm worried I won't get it right🙈
@ChameleonAcademy
@ChameleonAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Female chameleons, especially Veiled Chameleons, are prone to produce infertile clutches due to keeping them too warm and feeding them way too much. Most social media groups do not realize this danger and believe obese chameleons are healthy. So laybins have become standard in their cages. With proper feeding this is not a huge problem. If your female chameleon shows that she is developing eggs then simply putting in a laybin when you notice is easy enough. As long as she is healthy the egg laying should be no problem at all.

Can you breed vailed and panthers or other cross species as long as there both egg layers or both live birthed???
@ChameleonAcademy
@ChameleonAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few species that have been reported to cross breeding, but these are very rare. Veiled, panther, and Jackson's chameleons are from totally different genus and would not be able to interbreed.

I am doing the research right now. Once you dig in you find that there have been a lot of sales between breeders. When you are just looking for a pet this is not an issue at all. But, because I want to breed, I need to check back and see where I can get ones that are genetically distant. I have been talking with breeders already. Once I make decisions I will share on this channel. But everything is happening in real time!
