Great video guys and thanks for letting us know your homebrewtalk handles. I searched and found ted and Paul’s threads and that combined with this video really helped me feel confident in growing some hops and expanding my hobby. I love the idea of something ornamental and harvestable nevermind the fact that it’s going in some brew! I can’t thank you guys enough. My handle is beerisgud on homebrewtalk and I started a thread to just document my project if anyone wants to check it out or help me along the way!

I'm glad that I found your video. I bought 2 rizome starter pots from my local nursery. The clerk said I could "bury" them in home soil. They began to grow about 4 feet. I began to train them up a steel trellis of my pole barn. The hot weather came and they fried. Now it is fall (in Turlock, CA). I'm considering digging .them up and raising the root system. I don't see any green shoots yet. Wish me luck.

I am wondering if you have information on hops as far as environmental effects of quality, i.e. flavor Etc. To clarify my question, all hops being the same genus and species, just different varieties. If Centennial is native to a certain commercial growers area with climate and soil, and the variety is grown in your area, with different soil and climate, how much does it change the characteristics?

@Undefined9 Жыл бұрын
Go with hemp twine not bailing twine. Also, I tried getting rhizomes from nurseries, but they actually don't like hop plants because of how wild they grow; just too much maintenance. Finally, if you plant in planters, keep in mind that the root system of hop plants get HUGE so, within no later than two years, it needs to be transplanted.

One thing to note is that I ended up taking all of the twine out and replacing it with 1/4" Sisal Rope. Twine will work for 1st or maybe 2nd year plants, but the weight of a mature plant would likely be more weight than simple bailing twine can handle.

Hi Chip, I really enjoy watching your videos. I am a novice brewer. I am very interested in planting my own hops not only for brewing but for its aesthetics as well. In your video, Ted mentioned that he may have excess cascade hop rhizomes that you may be willing to part with. Is that offer still available? If so, I would love to get my hands on some of those. Thanks a lot for all you do for the brewing community. I've learned a lot.
@ChopAndBrew10 жыл бұрын
Without asking him, I would assume not at the moment. Since the hops are in mid-growing season, it is probably not safe to go cutting rhizomes from the plant. I would suggest waiting for rhizome preorders early next year via homebrew shops and getting in on the ground floor. Just my thoughts.

Sorry, Ben, I have never heard of varieties that are more or less edible. I have cooked shoots of Chinook and Fuggle and they seemed similar. It would make sense though that some would have different textures and maybe flavors at that young stage.

I am curious if you or anyone has ever used wild hops??? I whitewater kayak and on one of my runs in the summer I always stop and pick some and they have an amazing aroma, very strong! I just started home brewing since last summer and I thought if viable I would just dig a plant up and take it home. The area has plenty.
@ChopAndBrew10 жыл бұрын
I'd say give them a try. Maybe on a small batch for the first time. But wild hops are used in certain areas of the world like Russia. If the aroma is amazing like you say, I would tend to think they will have a positive result. (CW)
