Roger Williams Music (Mr. Piano)

Күн бұрын

In his magnificent and powerful 1986 performance, Roger introduced his CHOPIN MEDLEY that "shows the two sides of this man, the sentimental poet and that fiery revolutionary, who saw his beloved Poland invaded and fought back the only way he knew how, through his music." The medley excerpts include:
Nocturne in E-Flat Major (Op. 9 No. 2)
Etude in A minor (Op. 25 No. 11)
Etude in C minor (Op. 10 No. 12) aka “Revolutionary”
Fantasie Impromptu in C-Sharp minor (Op. 66)
Waltz No. 7 in C-Sharp minor (Op. 64, No. 2)
Scherzo No. 2 in B-Flat minor (Op. 31)
Polonaise No. 6 in A-Flat Major (Op. 53) aka “Heroic”

Marvelous. Chopin was called "the poet of the piano" and truly a most amazing composer. I enjoyed Roger Williams playing these beautiful pieces so exquisitely, a mixture of tender and powerful, including a favorite I learned back in 1971 (in college), The Revolutionary Etude and Fantasie Impromptu and Polonaise, that I love bit never learned. Kudos and thank you! ❤️🎹❤️🙏🎵🎶🎵🎶🎉🌟

I'm a working musicians/pianist but I also used to tune pianos. I served as the piano tuner for my college when I went back to school for 2.5 years, including the Steinway D and Bosendorfer 290 in the performing arts hall for the Fine Arts Series. I tuned for some of the greatest pianists anywhere, including a few very famous jazz and classical pianists.I met and tuned for Roger in early 1998 and I have to say that he made our Steinway D sound better than any other pianist I heard play that instrument. He played something as simple as, "The Rose", and it absolutely dumbfounded me how he could make one note "sing". His voicing of chords and attention to melody was first class. He also has a neat little trick he does at the end of the Chopin Polonaise in Ab, which he does in this video where he hits A0 and then Ab1 and you swear you are hearing an Ab an octave below that doesn't exist on a Steinway D. I waited until he talked to anyone that wanted to meet him after the concert because he was such a nice person(about 45 minutes) and then said, "how the hell did you get Ab0 out of a piano that doesn't have it?". He laughed and said, "you have perfect pitch and heard that, right?" I said, "yes" and we laughed. He brought me out to the piano and showed me on stage, but then said, "go out about 10 rows back into the hall and listen to it". His point was that on stage, your ear perceives it as more dissonant but if the listener gets some distance from the piano, the line becomes more blurred. The trick was, he hit the lowest A very loudly and immediately voiced in Ab1, which gives this interesting "growl" AND sounds like a low octave Ab. Also, his harmonic structures in some of the things he played were fantastic as he studied jazz with Teddy Wilson and Lennie Tristano in the early 50's, which we talked about. He was a superbly nice person and a great pianist. Sorry for such a long story, but watching this made me think of that night.

We went to a Roger Williams concert in Calgary in the eighties and it was the first time I had seen Roger in person. His records in the sixties was one of the reasons I took up the instrument. What struck us most about him was that we noticed before the concert began, he walked up and down the aisles in the Hall shaking peoples hands and talking with them. He was so relaxed and engaging and had a big , genuine smile on his face the whole time. He really seemed to enjoy his fans and absolutely gave of himself that night, on top of the fantastic concert he played for us later.

Thank you so much for sharing that! It is so true to who he was. He sincerely appreciated his fans that took the time to come out and see him. They motivated him to give his best no matter what he might have personally been enduring as he never wanted to let them down.

The transition between the nocturne and the a minor etude was the same as at the movie A song to remember. And it seems that Williams did this medley as a hommage to the movie.....could be? 🤔

I got so nervous when he sat down because I didn’t see the bench in front of the piano. Only the one he put the mic on. 😮 Roger is one of my favorite pianists. I’ve looked up to him since I was a toddler pretty much. I’ve seen him play a number of times every Christmas. Up until his last I think.

I think it is wonderful. I love the popularizers, My dad had German heritage and got us Strauss and other Viennese Music Waltzes etc from the Fin de Siecle glory days of the Habsburgs. Later he took us listening to Arturo Toscanini at KMJ series, also Arthur Fiedler, great popularizers of classical music. How strange the Jew-hating in Europe. Richard Wagner allowed his name to be dragged into the ranks of antisemitism, just like the physicist Heisenberg. Even Americans like Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh and Joseph Kennedy.
