I loved this! This piece by Chopin is one of the most heart wrenching pieces I know and I've heard a few classical pianists play it, each in their own tempos and with their own interpretations. Such a wonderful piece of music. Your second (jazzy) play of it was great. You took out that odd rest that I never know what to do with. Great stuff! The first two pieces have that postponed 'coming home' feeling that Benjamin Zander described in his Ted talk (I'm sure you've seen it. If not then do). www.ted.com/talks/benjamin_zander_on_music_and_passion?language=en
@KentHewittpiano887 жыл бұрын
Highlander, can't thank you enough for sharing this. Benjamin Zander is an inspiration and someone to aspire to...a way to make peoples lives better through appreciation of music. Also this is a great tribute to Chopin and how meaningful the piece becomes when you identify it with someone you loved and lost. If I had felt those emotions I'm sure I would have played it differently but the KZbin audience is different from a live audience. I felt that he rushed it, but for a reason. I wanted it to be more like in the film...and it works really well in the film "5 Easy Pieces". kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZO4p3-YnNOrf7M
@TheHighlander717 жыл бұрын
I think that's probably the thing with classical music, or any for that matter. It's different each time you play it depending on how it makes you feel. Zander really connects the music to the emotion and that's probably where classical music shines. I'm not the biggest classical fan, but some of the melodies and harmonies from classical music really tear me apart. I agree that Zander rushed it a bit and he made a few mistakes I think but all in all he got his point across. Thanks for that link by the way. I have to see that move again now :)

I like to imagine how Chopin listened to your jazz version of his prelude, and I'm pretty sure he would have very much enjoyed it. I also liked the comparison between Chopin's and Jobim's piece. That s great. I m Brazillian, never noticed the similarity. Of course there is some. "How Insensitive" is the deepest down point in all bossa nova "romantic" obsession. "Down" in terms of love depression, i m not sure if I am using the correct words. But after a loss in your life, THE BEST remedy is a bottle of Scotch, a piano, and play How Insensitive in constant looping...

It is a tempting conjecture, and indeed very likely that Jobim borrowed the tune from Chopin - they are almost too close. However, it must be given that the chord progression is sufficiently 'universal' to be discovered independently by more than one. It basically sounds like a chromatic descend of II-V's - possibly with some tritone coloring. That often happens with popular tunes. Listen to a pop radio station, and you will find a plethora of tunes built on the same simple progressions. There is after all, a finite number of ways to harmonize that pleases the human ear.
@KentHewittpiano884 жыл бұрын
I agree with your statement. What's intriguing is the similarity in feeling and the melodic line and how it in ways is similar to the Chopin piece. Thanks for the comment!

side topic I have wondered for a while if classical improvisation was valid. Before I started to listen to Jazz or knew very little about theory (still a littled stumped) I was playing classically inclined improvs. I was really into Rimsky Korsocov , LIszt etc.. lots of eastern european music, not just classical but indigeneous folk music, I still love that stuff. Hell I know I can't get close to the skillset of classically trained musicians Liszt in his day, reinterpreted Chopin, that probably woke a lot of musicians up So it seems fair to say much of this music is open to interpretation and improvisational techniques. One can ask how would a classical trained musician or composer 10 20 50 100 200... years hear Chopin? and later writers like Charles Aznavour has had some of his amazing melodies butchered to pulp and some completely owned by others and they soar. I would say his eastern european roots have something to do with his musical aesthetic, culture perhaps en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Aznavour

Wow , I didn't realize that Aznavour had that level of stature...what a story! That's the amazing thing about music ...there's always a individual and unique interpretation of a piece of music by any composer...each player can have his own take on it. Check out Gabriela Montero, a great artist who improvises on Bach. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriela_Montero

I love it when other musicians amaze and move me :3 Maybe there should be an alter dominant ego man version?

That's why we exist, but often we don't realize what we do, because we're too subjective. So many musicians amaze me, but not necessarily for technique, but more for lyricism and incredible ideas. The alter ego works in us to try to remove our fears...and to allow us to take chances.

Seems like they are related . in all fairness.. I sit down sometime and start composing on the fly.. then I realize I'm playing yesterday, piano man or some other tune in our collective consciousness..
