We are having a hard time getting first crop of hay up. Jay had surgery on an eye and is laid up for a few more days. I offered to mow it for him but there is rain in the forecast for nearly every day. He wants to chop now but the chopping crew isn’t too keen on it because of the 5 miles of road travel. I hope he talks them into it

It's pretty tuff around here this year also with all the rain, but at least we have moisture this year. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery.

That's some great looking hay you're putting up! Until you mentioned it, I forgot about the need for drier hay in upright silos vs bunkers. Most of the big farms around here switched to bunk 30 years ago & chop sopping wet hay & corn. Almost doesn't seem like it's been that long.

Most don't want it too wet in the pit, anything running out, is nutrition down the drain. Literally. Only a few uprights around here.. otherwise it's all pit storage. Not many in use now, only 2 or 3 dairies left in the county. 😢

Kinda figured the silo would be empty….as I recall I don’t think you chopped any haylage last year. In my opinion harvestore silos are still the best way to handle haylage

@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin Not too many dairies left here either. And this is the Dairy State. Just lost a big one up the road a few months ago. Pitched the milkers & kept the equipment to cash crop & custom work. What percentage does silage get dried down to these days? Think it was around 30% years ago.

There are still a few silos in use around here. Thanks for watching.

@@andylieffring3987 it was empty, last year was just easier to make dry hay with it being so dry. Thanks for watching.

It's been a long time since I helped fill silo. Never filled a Harvestor but there were many in the neighborhood. Thank you Erik.

I enjoy filling silo. If those silos are properly maintained, they make excellent feed. Thanks Bryce.

I’m envious of blue sky and green hay. Cool shot up on the Harvestore. Man, that Deere gets right along with the chopper. I can smell the sweet haylige from here. Interesting process. Nice catch on that bearing so it didn’t fall off in the field. How many acres will you store this year.
@pinesedgefarm11553 ай бұрын
Sounds like a lot of rain on the way again. We sure didn't need it to fall off.

That's some good lookin cow chow....What moisture do you dry it down to for the Harvestor silo? Lots of Red Power at the silos👍👍👍...Thanks Erik.
@pinesedgefarm11553 ай бұрын
Thanks Brent. We usually go for around 50%.

Haylage on a pile at 30-40%will test /feeds well. Better a bit dry. Keeps the metabolic problems down with fresh cows. Looks like a decent crop.
@pinesedgefarm11553 ай бұрын
The equipment handles dryer feed better in the winter too. The hay crop did very well.
