Funny thing is that both songs were choreographed by Sienna Lalau. She is a genius choreographer and I consider the props to be an integral part of the choreography (not a separate entity). For example, Jimin uses props for his Filter choreo and that’s what makes the performance so much more intricate and exciting. Props are harder to work with and add an element of additional thrill so for that reason, I would vote for Dionysus. But the ON dance break will always be epic.

Dionysus is much more difficult to preform even Jhope has to be peeled off the ground after doing it and Jimin and Tae have had injuries. Plus with Rm clumsiness I am always impressed he doesn't fall climbing on the table. ON is a better song but the choreography is better in Dionysus

On is my favorite choreo but I don't think ya'll understand the added level of difficulty any time props are used in a dance performance. Especially when the dancer is maneuvering on top of, off of, over and onto the props that are almost constantly in movement 💜

Chereography is the sequence of steps and movements in the dance. Jumping on and off tables requires movements, intricate steps, and little room for mistakes. Dionysus is a winner for me because of the energy, the change in beat during the intermission. I believe this choreography requires more thinking. You have to get the timing quite right. Taking out the props destroys the choreo....just as you cant remove some of those interweaving background dancers, their drums, and sticks in the ON choreo. It's a matter of preference.

ON might have more difficult choreo , but Dionysus choreo was more pleasing to watch. As far as performance, it was Dionysus hands down! Like Curtis said, the props with hidden reveals makes it so much better than ON. If your vid was about which was more difficult choreo then it would be ON, but that makes your vid a bit bland. Then most of your choreo battles are gonna be black and white. You should do a performance comparison video which you can factor in overall performance and choreo.

I would argue that ON uses PEOPLE (the dancers) as props and for hidden reveals as well. Much more complex, difficult to pull off (with having to coordinate so many ppl instead of just a single prop) and fulfilling to watch (imo)

Nick, I’m sorry but pyrotechnics and props in choreo are NOT the same. As a dancer and performer (I’ve been dancing for 15 years and doing theatre for 9), using props is most definitely choreography. You have to block and mark each prop. You have to block and mark each dancer that’s going to use the prop. You have to choreograph the exact movements they use with the movements that happen both before and after the move in mind. Every movement, every chair, and every table brought into frame gets blocked. Blocking a move is apart of choreography, whether it’s for a person or a prop. It’s not as simple as, move this here then find your mark. When choreo is as technical as Dionysus, every step is blocked because you have to be able to go into the next move with a smooth transition. If you pay attention to the background dancers, they’re always leading straight into the next dance move after handling their specific prop. And if you watch multiple performances of this song and focus on one specific background dancer, you’ll notice that they move the same way each time. That’s because all of those movements are blocked in a particular way, which is a HUGE part of choreographing any body of work.

Also, to agree with Curt and Jerrick, specific space for freestyles in choreo is still choreo bc the piece was choreographed with that freestyle portion in mind. And often times, freestyled portions I’m choreo still get tweaked and perfected to fit the overall performance. So a dancer’s original freestyle can become a truly choreographed part for that specific person if the freestyle moves that they chose didn’t fit the overall picture.

I do film and I treat scenes the same way dancers treat choreography… Everything needs to be staged and blocked.. Everything needs to be accounted for… I think both this choreographies require a lot of detail, timing, accuracy and talent to do.. Absolutely enjoyed this reaction. It really is a difficult choice between the two. This is the first time I wholeheartedly disagree with everything Nick said. I think that Nick's arguments are sound, but only if you change the title to Dance Battle as opposed to Choreo Battle. Choreography is the planned movements of a performance, not just the dance. The staging, how a mic is held, etc... are all considered choreography. Usage of props increases the difficulty level of choreagraphy automatically. Nick's analogy of pyrotechnics is a moot point, as it doesn't deal with planned movement (except staying clear of them). In regards to the comment on Jimin's scarf, it too didn't quite convince me. While I agree that the dance would have been phenominal without it, it dimishes the skill in using it. In order to be properly executed, the scarf has to be held, grabbed, thrown, and manipulated in a particular manner. Personally I think the formations in 'On' were more challenging, but those were largely handled by 'The Lab' dance crew as opposed to BTS. While I agree that the choreo for the chorus hit harder than the chorus for 'Dionysus', I think the choreo overall for 'Dionysus' was technically much more difficult. Because BTS is so good, they make difficult moves look easy. They even had to change some of the choreo in the prechorus because the members were getting injuries (in earlier choreo they used to fall into a plank position). I think it takes a more energy to perform 'On' than 'Dionysus', but the average dancer would be able to learn and execute the choreography. The same cannot be said for 'Dionysus', which is why I would have to give the slight edge to 'Dionysus'.

I disagree completely (Respectfully).., I don’t think your average dancer can learn either of these choreographies… You definitely have to plan your Choreo around pyrotechnics and other things.., Some people literally choreography full performances around pyrotechnics.. the Jimin scarf thing was just another example of if you remove one thing the overall performance wouldn’t change.. Overall I think both Choreos are elite and it gets to a point where you have to nitpick if you like one over the other.. I respect your feedback and opinion… the point of doing these are for people to debate/learn new things so I definitely wanna see all your responses.. I gotta say I'm leaning more to Jerrick and Curtis on this one. I'm a dancer myself and so I totally agree that props are an integral part of a choreography. You have to consider it when deciding what choreography is better or which is harder. Because when props is integrated to the dance movements, then of course, the movements with the props becomes part of the choreography. Therefore, going up and down the stairs, for example, or going up, below, or over the table is part of the choreography. People usually forget how hard it is to work around props, it's so challenging and it could get exhausting too. Imagine dancing with a chair and doing some steps then moving the chair around, isn't it challenging while dancing and getting the timing right? How much more doing it with a whole crew and your members and getting everybody on time? So, that's what Jerrick is trying to say, I guess. And I believe, Jerrick dances too(?), he mentioned in a video, so it's probably why he says the inclusion of props matter on the debate. Overall, both choreos are ridiculously hard HARD. The arms swinging and legs gliding in Dionysus, and a lot of body bends in ON, and all these intricate steps in both make it a tie for me! It's just a matter of preference. Also, the backup dancers in ON and their choreo is extremely hard to pull off as a group too. Their steps looks simple but there's no room for error or else it will easily be seen by the viewers.

You take away the other dancers and the props and you are left with the intricate timing of the choreos. Even though ON has bigger movements the timing for the BTS members on Dionysus is more impressive. One of the guys can make an error in ON and you may not catch it but with Dionysus, one error and it will throw of the whole routine.

Face it, it's a tie 😜 Actually, if you had showed the original posted dance practice for Dionysus, I would pick Dionysus. It's because on the original choreography (before they changed the one choreo move) there was difficult move to execute. One wrong move and you hurt yourself. They performed it a few times and then two members got hurt, so they changed that one part. It's the part where they fall into a push-up pose on the ground (I don't know what it's called). I think this was a match to wait for. Since this Dionysus performance was different from its original choreo since it’s for an award show. I think you should revisit this when you watch the ON MAMA 2020 then match it up. Because both are for awards and altered. Also, props is part of choreo. When you see the ON performance with its props it would be better. I think judge it as a performance battle

aaaaaaaaaaaaa. I had to stop the video before you got into your talking points because I'm already fired up. these two songs have legendary choreography. dyonysis has a certain wow factor with all the moving pieces/props and king swag. but on. ON. oh baby. that has a speed, synchronization and sharpness that is simply breathtaking. both songs have tempo switches that are god tier. both are meant for stadiums. both allow members to shine. but ON has that edge for me. maybe it's the band and other dancers. it's just pure adrenaline.

Your discussion reminds me of the BUTTER dance break in Grammys.. They used cards and a cloth to pull it off. So isn't that part of choreo too and should be considered when talking about the choreo? Also the storytelling could affect the choreo in a way, as what Curtis is trying to say, because choreos are made to fit into a song and most often when choreographers make it, they really consider the lyrics. I used to make choreos back years back and I had to depend on the lyrics or the meaning of the song, aside from the beats, to actually make movements out of it.
